My top ten for a compact car: 1. Curb weight under 3000 pounds approaching 2500 pounds 2. Combined fuel economy rating exceeding 30 mpg 3. Power to weight ratio approaching 1:15 4. Information system that provides the driver with understandable diagnostics 5. Statement on life expectancy of major engine components 6. Options that are client-centred (e.g. only GT has 5 speed transmission) 7. Seats that are not sofas (as per Mazda prototypes) 8. Backseats that fold completely flat and are removeable 9. Interior materials that can be replaced affordably X. Ding-resistant body panels

Add the ability to open the trunk from the keyfob remote (if not already implemented in the 09 version. I have an 08 and the absence of this feature is annoying). A better oil dipstick - it is virtually impossible to check the oil level with what they include. My old 96 Protege was much better in this regard. Nothing else that I can think of at the moment.

Replying to: shipo (Dec 24, 2008 7:08 am) I was all set to buy a GTI but the local VW dealers showed no interest in ordering a car to my specs. Couple that with the fact that none of the local VW service departments hire techs with opposable thumbs and the GTI dropped off my short list. That said, in retrospect I can't say that my experience with the MS3 has been that much better- bad strut(25K), bad turbo(26K), and rattles and squeaks du jour...

Replying to: shipo (Dec 24, 2008 7:08 am) Right now I have a Jetta for myself and a Civic EXL for my wife which both have the heated exterior mirror. BTW Iast weekend my son and I tested drive Lancer, Mazda 3 and Sentra. all have no stick shift except a 08 Mazda3 i which has no power window and lock. probably left over more than 6 months. On the way home, he almost burnt out my Jetta's clutch. (as there is heavy burnt smell after arriving home). Happy holiday and safe driving Wai |

Replying to: roadburner (Dec 24, 2008 8:01 am) 1) We do real well and both wifey and I plant our butts back in BMWs (and our kids get to share the Mazda3), at least one of which MUST be obtained via the ED program. 2) We do moderately well and I plant my butt in a Gen 6 GTI, wifey takes the Mazda3 (which she loves), and then we'll let the kids share our one remaining Dodge Grand Caravan (won't they be thrilled with that). 3) We just scrape by, I keep the Mazda3 as my commuter hack, wifey buys something like a Rabbit/Mazda3/Civic for her next car, and the kids once again get to share her 2003 DGC. Best regards, Shipo
