Strange that your car doesn't have an indicator for the washer fluid, my 2007 does (canadian though, but really it shouldn't matter). I agree about the long tube, I am not sure but I don't know that it is actually supposed to come out, but like you mine does, it does seem to be easier to put back in after the first time though if that's any consolation. As for the size of the reservoir it seems to be mainly european cars that have one large enough for a whole container of washer fluid, every other ca I have had just does't let me put a full container in, I agree it isn't the way I prefer it.

Hmmm, that's odd, I've had a 5-liter container in five Chrysler products, two VW/Audi cars, two BMWs, and a Mazda MX-6. Go figure.
 
Thanks for the advice on the light and the filler neck/tube. I'll look further into it.

The tube is Mazda's bargain-basement method to check the washer fluid level. You put your finger over the hole in the reservoir cap and then you remove the cap. Since your finger is over the hole in the cap the tube will show the fluid lever. Brilliant, no?
I can't wait to find an E46 330i ZHP or M3 ZCP...

Thanks! Oddly enough, even though I didn't know they did the tube thing on purpose, that's exactly how I checked my level earlier today.

That's pretty cool, I never knew why that tube was there. I do know that I don't have a low washer fluid light in my 2008.

My top ten for a compact car:
 
1. Curb weight under 3000 pounds approaching 2500 pounds
2. Combined fuel economy rating exceeding 30 mpg
3. Power to weight ratio approaching 1:15
4. Information system that provides the driver with understandable diagnostics
5. Statement on life expectancy of major engine components
6. Options that are client-centred (e.g. only GT has 5 speed transmission)
7. Seats that are not sofas (as per Mazda prototypes)
8. Backseats that fold completely flat and are removeable
9. Interior materials that can be replaced affordably

Add the ability to open the trunk from the keyfob remote (if not already implemented in the 09 version. I have an 08 and the absence of this feature is annoying).
 
A better oil dipstick - it is virtually impossible to check the oil level with what they include. My old 96 Protege was much better in this regard.
 
Nothing else that I can think of at the moment.

My 2009 has trunk poppage from the fob. I'm guessing that that will carry over to the new 2010s.

Agree with you (6) that heated outside mirror is a must for cars driving in the rain/snow. however this safety feature only appears in Civic EXL, and no other compact cars have that, even the Corolla with leather trim.

IIRC, both the Rabbit (which I actually wanted to buy over the Mazda3, just couldn't find one in a stick) and the Jetta have heated external mirrors. What makes the whole heated mirror thing even annoying is that 190 miles north of me (i.e. north of the Canadian border), ALL Mazda3s come with heated mirrors. Grrrr. It seems as if both Honda and Mazda (and Toyota too?) think that wintery weather stops at Canada's southern border.
