Hey guys, I just got a mini-brochure from the Ford folks on the 2011 (!) Fiesta. The pics make the sedan look very stylish--my wife says "hot"--and they're including pics of the five-door as well. With any luck we might get both models. Alas, no diesel for the US yet. In other news, VW is rumored to have plans to bring the Polo here next year. With those, plus the redesigned Fit already here, it looks as though the "supermini" class may actually be about to take off in the US. And just in time, too. . .

I think Ford is on the right track here but so often fumbles as it comes to particulars. First I hope they speed the intro up as I am soon in the market selling something much more expensive. Second I hope they bring the 3 door hatch and not just the 5 door or sedan. I got a bad feeling they may not import the 3 door. Third -make sure they bring the 3 door in a GTI type sport version. If they do the above I would be very tempted to buy American again. Several competitors are on the horizon ( Suzuki Swift Sport, Mazda 2, Toyota or Scion IQ, VW Polo (including a GTI version), Audi A1, Chevrolet Cruze and Spark, Honda CRZ, Kia Forte Coupe, Nissan (?), You can be sure that many of these mentioned will have a hot hatch version. Ford could gain some much needed sales by speeding this process up quickly and beat many mentioned here to market. |

I really like the red color in the interior and the unique center stack. Very classy looking.

It doesn't look like the two door hatch (three) is gonna make it to our shores. Why?

| Not unless we get the three door too! My fear is that they start out with no three door and then soften the suspension of the sedan for "Murcans". Yuck! I thought by now they would have strangled or laid off the mouth breather who made these kind of marketing decisions in the past. I WANT this car but if they pull a Westmoreland Rabbit marketing strategy, I won't touch the thing. I offer them a better plan: The sedan priced down in the mid teens to start - decent equipment plus options if you want to pay for them. Option up the three door, hotter engine (equal or better than Mini), sports package, etc. - priced under a base Mini plus options (about $23K, we all know how those add up on the Mini) , say, $20-21K (with the usual nav, radios, wheels, etc. options for those that want to spend the bucks (most of us). I know there will be price compression with the upcoming Focus but the cooking Focus will go heads up against the GTI in the $25-26K range so there appears to be room. One last proviso: The engine in the hotter Fiesta has to be special and recognizable as such. Definition: Very good like it is but upgradeable or tunable by both factory (twin turbo 1.4 for instance) or aftermarket (stout enough for turbocharging with maybe a closed deck block and high spec crank and rods. Just one geek's ideas, you Edmund's guys got get 'em and we'll all dance at your wedding(s) as my Granma used to say! | |
