I'm thinking back...weren't Festivas actually built by Kia or something? So the durability wasn't necessarily attributable to Ford.

But I also hope that the Fiesta is durable, and that they offer a wide range of trims that include one or two close to European spec. And that they then use the Fiesta as a springboard to improve all their North American cars, starting with the Focus.

"... weren't Festivas actually built by Kia...?"

I believe that's right. The Ford Festiva was a essentially a rebadged Mazda (2 maybe?).

The only thing that disappointed me about the report was the description of the steering feel with the electric power steering, since steering feel is a strong attribute of the U.S. Focus and European Fords. Ford isn't unique on this, however, since steering feel of the the '09 Acura TSX and TL has been criticized too. Acura also converted to electric power steering.

I note in the original statement that the European Fiesta is coming off the line in Cologne. Where I'm guessing any number of the really good Euro/Brit Fords come from. Anything we buy in North America will be coming out of Mexico "built to American tastes". Did no one learn anything after VW starting manufacturing in Mexico? The cars were falling apart in the showroom. If I could have a GTi made in Mexico or Germany which would I pick? If the new Focus is going to be available with the five cylinder version, great! It will make room below for the Fiesta which must be offered with more than one engine if it is going to succeed. There is a nice short video test of the new four door Fiesta on Fifth Gear (home of the Powerslide) . Tom Ford (who is neither small nor shy) has a lot good to say about it.

2010 seems a long ways away by Al_in_Philly

Even though Ford has gotten this design from the auto shows to the showrooms of Europe in record time, I'm dying for them to get this model stateside, and 2010 seems like a really long wait. America hasn't had a fun really small sedan from the Big 3 in so very long. Beyond that, it's just drop dead gorgeous. I was afraid of what the Americanized sedan might wind up looking like--the original design was a hatchback--but the latest pictures on the Ford website look great, maybe even better looking than the hatchbacks. My only gripe about the design of this car is that the silver plastic accents look like a cheap cell phone. Hey Ford, why not give us something resembling the finish on an i-phone, with some glossy black finish, if you want to look like a cell? My only other gripe is that there aren't any announced plans to bring an RS version her any time in the future. Boy would this be a hot little car with a HP 2 litre engine shoehorned under the hood. Regardless, I still want one!

Hey guys, I just got a mini-brochure from the Ford folks on the 2011 (!) Fiesta. The pics make the sedan look very stylish--my wife says "hot"--and they're including pics of the five-door as well. With any luck we might get both models. Alas, no diesel for the US yet.

In other news, VW is rumored to have plans to bring the Polo here next year. With those, plus the redesigned Fit already here, it looks as though the "supermini" class may actually be about to take off in the US. And just in time, too. . .

I wonder if it will really make it next year though, what with Ford's difficulties right now. I hope so. We need the Fiesta and the Polo to spruce up the subcompact market!

The Fiesta may be just the juice Ford needs to turn things around. Keep in mind that this is likely going to come in at a lower price point than most other models (except maybe a stripper Focus). That opens Ford up to a bunch of people who couldn't consider them before...basically a new market segment can consider Ford, and Ford can target them.

Basically, they're targeting people who would consider the Aveo, Yaris, and Versa. And considering a used rollerblade is more desirable than an Aveo or Yaris, Ford should pick up a lot of sales.

I think Ford is on the right track here but so often fumbles as it comes to particulars. First I hope they speed the intro up as I am soon in the market selling something much more expensive. Second I hope they bring the 3 door hatch and not just the 5 door or sedan. I got a bad feeling they may not import the 3 door. Third -make sure they bring the 3 door in a GTI type sport version. If they do the above I would be very tempted to buy American again.

Several competitors are on the horizon ( Suzuki Swift Sport, Mazda 2, Toyota or Scion IQ, VW Polo (including a GTI version), Audi A1, Chevrolet Cruze and Spark, Honda CRZ, Kia Forte Coupe, Nissan (?), You can be sure that many of these mentioned will have a hot hatch version. Ford could gain some much needed sales by speeding this process up quickly and beat many mentioned here to market.

I really like the red color in the interior and the unique center stack. Very classy looking.
