Try the Mazda 3 or the Elantra Touring.

Like so many, I love mine. 2009 base model with AT. Comfortable on a 1500 mile trip where I averaged 42.5 mpg. Convenient and fun around town--suburban driving--where I get 32 to 35 mpg. I just hauled a large size recliner in the back, much to the unbelief of the habitat folks when I delivered it. I have also hauled a large electric stove and I regularly put my bike in the back without taking off the front wheel. The Fit just fits my needs perfectly. (-:

Just one person's report of a reason to love it. Of course, I'm "normal" size at 5'8" and 164 pounds which might be part of the reason it fits me so well.

I'm 6'-6", 240# and I was astounded when I sat in a Fit. It Fits better than some large SUVs! It's magic.

I've just signed to buy a 2010 Fit, base model. I'm wondering how it performs in icy conditions.

Performance in icy conditions are all in the tires. If you equip your Fit with tires that perform well in snow/ice, the Fit should do just fine and as well as any other car in like conditions.
