"So - what's the point of cars like the Fit, Yaris, and Versa?"

I think you don't give enough thought to the fact different people want or need different things. I don't want a larger car, and I don't equate larger with more comfortable. When I first drove a Fit I fell in love and now 9 months later am still in love. It's cute. It's practical for me. It's fun to drive. Would I like 50 mpg instead, you bet. But if I had to pay for a BMW to get it, I wouldn't. Not I can't; I wouldn't. Somewhere on one of these lists was a link to an article that showed the Fit a better mpg buy than a Prius. In fact, the Fit came out at the top of the list. They (Consumer Reports maybe?) took into consideration, mpg, purchase price, and estimated other costs such as repairs. Just as not everyone wants a sports car, not everyone wants a bigger car or a more powerful car or whatever. Cute and nimble lights my fire.

And the new TDI exceeds the MPG and power of the Fit, in a larger and more comfortable car. So - what's the point of cars like the Fit, Yaris, and Versa?

You are making a legitimate and reasonable point. Look at Europe - it is full of diesel-based cars across segments. Given the inherent mechanical and thermal efficiency of diesel, there is no doubt that it can do for the C-segment, for instance, what a gasoline engine can do only for the B-segment.

Of course, I am limiting myself to the discussion of pure fuel efficiency here. If you bring in the price of a vehicle such as the Jetta TDI, which for the current model goes for over $20k, then a different economy of scale tends to kick in for many people. The same argument is used versus hybrids like the Prius as well. Many of us do not have and/or do not want to spend more than $15 for any car, to give or take a few bucks, and for such people, the purchase comes from a balancing act between the fuel efficiency and vehicle purchase price. Cars like the Fit, Yaris, and Versa tend to hit this balance well, and thus the popularity.

Of course, there are other factors to be balanced, such as the size of the car, reliability, etc., and everyone places a different weight on them.

Good points you two made. I wasn't thinking about the cost factor, or the nimbleness that comes from a smaller, and lighter car. And we've been on a bigger is better trend for quite a while, where a new car design is nearly always heavier than the previous model. So, I am hoping that future designs will have a better balance of weight, power, and cost.

Also, there's one other thing I overlooked. Since the EPA numbers were adjusted for 2008, it makes most new cars' ratings look lower than they should. I think the new numbers are too pessimistic, because I've always been able to meet or slightly exceed the miles per gallon figures of the older numbers, even with no hypermiling techniques.

Fit Almost a Fit by nrborod

I want to love Fit. And I almost fit in it. What would make all the difference is if Honda installed a little knob to raise or lower the front of the seat cushion ala the 1998-2002 Accord system.( remember that set up? It really was good) Could use a little more sound deadening in the engine compartment as well.
I figure there are people who would want this car with these feature. How much more could that possibly cost?
Otherwise, I find the car attractive to look at, pleasant to drive for an economy car, and ingenious in interior design. Please help me love the Fit.

Like so many, I love mine. 2009 base model with AT. Comfortable on a 1500 mile trip where I averaged 42.5 mpg. Convenient and fun around town--suburban driving--where I get 32 to 35 mpg. I just hauled a large size recliner in the back, much to the unbelief of the habitat folks when I delivered it. I have also hauled a large electric stove and I regularly put my bike in the back without taking off the front wheel. The Fit just fits my needs perfectly. (-:

Just one person's report of a reason to love it. Of course, I'm "normal" size at 5'8" and 164 pounds which might be part of the reason it fits me so well.

I've just signed to buy a 2010 Fit, base model. I'm wondering how it performs in icy conditions.

Performance in icy conditions are all in the tires. If you equip your Fit with tires that perform well in snow/ice, the Fit should do just fine and as well as any other car in like conditions.
