Comparison Test: 2009 Hyundai Genesis 4.6 vs. 2008 Lexus GS 350 - Hyundai isn't shy about its targets for the Genesis. The Genesis 3.8 would have also been just as good because the 290 ponies it pumps out is on regular fuel and the 303 the GS350 puts out is on premium. Fill the tank on the Genesis with premium and the output is much closer to the GS350. I realize we don't have data on how well the Hyundai will hold up for trade-in value but I figure it will do slightly better but not significantly better than current Hyundai models. If this is so, a used Genesis will be a steal in a couple of years.

Normally edmunds has good write ups on all autos. But ,on the above either the writer must be working for Lexus or really not like Hyundai and I will, in detail explain why. First the article takes the v6 Lexus and compares it to a v8 Hyundai ( so they can keep price comparisons down) and show better mileage for the Lexus. The Hyundai cost approx. $42,000. The base GS460 v8 has a base of $52,020, probable around $60000 with equivalent extras. Car and driver puts the Hyundai at 0 to 60 in 5.6 seconds and 14.1 at 103 in the quarter mile. edmunds has no info of this lexus in performance specs, but probable about the same. On gas mileage the Hyundai EPA is better. As the Lexus v8 only gets 17/ 24 -- not as good as the Hyundai . The Hyundai has more interior room and a larger trunk , gets better skid pad results , shorter breaking and is probable just as quiet as the Lexus-- but edmunds didnt say. Also I believe the v6 Lexus requires premium gas. And needless to say Hyundai has a better warrentee . And this is Hyundai's first attempt . How would the 1989 Lexus compare with this model Hyundai. So lets wrap this up . For about $20000 less than a comparable Lexus , you get a Hyundai that gets better gas milege , excellent quality , larger interior , larger truck, better skid pad results ,,shorter breaking results, probable just as quiet at speed and can run on regular gas . I know its hard to match Lexus 100% . But Hyundai's first try is - 90 to 95 % as good .Probable better than the Lexus first try. I think this artical should be rewritten , by someone more knowledgeable or impartcal. Obviously this was a hurry-up get it done artical . It misrepresents the Hyundai product and mis informs the public. You Guys write excellent --- Someones not meeting your writing and content quality standards. Respectfully submitted.

I said this on the thread regarding the first test, but it probably is worth repeating here: were these cars fueled at the same place? The original Edmunds V-8 test had the same time running Regular and this time was supposedly on Premium. Plus other tests have come in at 5.5-5.7, as joe97 already noted. Have to wonder what's going on here. Perhaps was something wrong with this particular example? Not good if so, but I sure would like to see a 2nd test with a different 4.6.

i'm not surprised by the slow times of the Genesis. every review with acceleration tests shows the Genesis in the mid to high 5s. the reason Edmunds has the times at 5.9 is because they don't allow for the 1 foot of roll-out as with a drag strip that Car and Driver and Motor Trend probably allow. if they did, the time would have been around 5.6 seconds which is consistent with everyone else as is the 14.1 quarter mile time, although the trap speed of 101 mph is about 2 mph low. the time for the GS350 would then improve to 5.4 for 0-60, but the quarter mile would of course stay the same at 14.0 at 99.5 mph. i don't know exactly why the Genesis is so much slower than the Lexus GS (both), Pontiac G8, Mercedes E550, and BMW 550i (or 535i) despite having better or similar power to weight numbers. my guess is worse tires (the slalom and skidpad numbers would also improve with performance tires), worse gearing (shifts before redline) and an underachieving engine (also F/E not as good in real world, also seen in the Azera). as for the Genesis having a better result with the V6, i doubt it. the V6 with tech package is only $2,000 less, and the F/E is only about 1-2 mpg better, yet the engine performance would suffer and definitely the braking performance. the skidpad would probably improve, but i understand the electro-hydraulic steering makes the V8 better in the slalom. also they didn't like the steering feel of the V8; the V6 is even worse, and the quality of materials, at least the leather, is worse in the V6. the Genesis wouldn't seem as impressive in V6 form against the Lexus, despite being about $9,000 less. it would really seem more like getting what you paid for. having said all that i still agree with Inside Line. the Genesis is better considering the price advantage.

Only car journalists and car nerds care about 0-60 times and slalom speeds for luxury cars like these two. The typical Doctor, Lawyer, Investment Banker etc. could care less about those kinds of statistics. It's all about comfort, luxury features, safety, and name brand recognition. It's obvious from this article if one were to block out the name Hyundai as being inferior, it's clearly the better buy. Even without the $7,000 price difference I would pick the Hyundai over the Lexus. Sadly anyone shopping in the $40,000 to $50,000 price range for a car will probably place more importance on being a badge whore than driving the best car for their money. Do I think the Hyundai is worth every penny of its $42,000 asking price, yes, absolutely. Do I think most people with that kind of money to spend on a car will agree with me, probably not. This was a big gamble by Hyundai, and I hope people prove my prediction wrong and buy up every Genesis Hyundai can make. Being a proud and very happy owner of a 2009 Sonata Limited V6 I have a vested interest in seeing Hyundai do as well as possible. I'm just not sure if the Genesis is going to do well. Most people buying Hyundai's try to nickel and dime the dealerships for every last cent they can get off the MSRP (not me, but go read the Sonata Prices Paid forum to see what I'm talking about), which is quite a different crowd than a Lexus/BMW/Infiniti buyer. I am not any sort of Hyundai fanboi here, but that was some terribly one-sided, thinly disguised bias. There was no real justification for a v6 to v8 review here people. Terribly dissapointed and will view all of your reviews a little differently from now on... We wont get into the discrepancies in performance numbers from other sites either... I agree with Drex...I honestly think the editor was biased since the previous full test posted better numbers with KDM suspension settings. Hyundai has stiffened the suspension for American taste.... Also I do think Hyundai could have picked better tires for the Genesis says either Bridgestone or Michelin instead of Dunlops. I hope the coupe will have more positive reviews.

Lexus really needs to something about their lineup. Most of their cars are always being bashed (for no good reason), and this article is not good news. As a former Lexus owner, I can testify to the extraordinary quality of their vehicles, plush is a word that comes to mind. Admittedly there are very few Lexus buyers who will be swayed by this comparison, the Hyundai drivers will feel good about their purchase but as someone said, its unlikely someone committed to the luxury models at that price range would change their mind. I for one will shop for a V8 from the Europeans or the Japanese, ONLY. Of all the existing V8s in the 40-50k range (base), the only one I find appealing is the Infiniti FX50. The G350/460, E class, 5 series, Infiniti M, although there are nice cars, but never been appealing to me. I guess its tough to be in the middle of real luxury (S Class) and perfomance, (335i). I have no pity for Lexus, they should do something to ensure they never lose in these pitiful comparisons, but bottomline is they lost, irrespective of what I think.
