As I stated before, 44% of Genesis owners have household income of over $100K

I am surprised the percentage is SO LOW. Most of the people I know who make $80K - $100K can only afford used cars or maybe a Sonata or Santa Fe. Most families have too many other expenses. Maybe if it is a single person or someone who has their house paid off. A typical example today is my single cousin who makes in the $60K's and has a $2600 house payment soon to adjust to $4000 per month. No new car for her !!!

I'd agree with you on the borrowed money note. Personally, I've never financed a car in my life. The only other option aside from paying cash for me is leasing, something I have done many many times. I like this option since not only the monthly payments are a lot smaller (vs. financing), but more importantly, I can have a new toy every two or three years.

Obviously, prestige plays an imporant factor in the luxury segement, and Hyundai isn't up to par on that front yet. I understand a good part of the demographic in this segment buy (actually lease, more than buy) cars for that reason, but stats have also shown there are plenty of folks with sufficient dough and doesn't care about the emblem of the car, as long as it's a good car to their likes.

In terms of value, Hyundai has not played that angle yet so far in the previewed ad of the Genesis:

Don't take this the wrong way as I am being most sincere:

If I was in this situation, I would seriously sit myself down and look at my personal finances. People making half as much can afford a new Sonata/Santa Fe (examples from your post).

Another side of this discussion is that there are a good number of people in the world that DO finance automobiles.

And a large number of the people that finance these autos DO consider what their monthly payment is going to be.

When you take a look at the monthly payment on $15000-$25000 extra dollars, you have to consider that there are some people who get priced out of the M-B, Lexus, BMW equation.

The Genesis gives a large number of people the opportunity to own an auto that DOES offer most of the style, lux, and performance of the "upper tier" brands at a price/payment they can afford.

One other thought. If you pay cash for a car, then you are putting that money into a depreciating asset. Every day and every mile that goes by you are throwing cash out the window. If you finance your car at a rate that is less than or equal to what you can draw at market, you are coming out even or ahead on your cash. Then at the end of the term you have your paid for car as an asset, plus the cash that you kept in the bank. Just a thought.

Don't forget that just looking at the upfront price of a car when purchasing new or used is not an intelligent method of determining whether you truly are purchasing relative 'value.'

Often, the buyer who pays more upfront is making the rational decision if the car has a higher residual value.

This whole thing comparing a Hyundai ( XXXXXXX) with Lexus (XX) is absurd in a lexus Forum.
They do not even look similar in Size , Weight , Style or Price.
Both cater to different Markets.
All Hyundai did was benchmark it against Lexus.
Its good to see other Manufacturers aim at the Lexus so the end up atleast better than where they are now or fall in between.

My 2 cents

Just my 2 cents.

A GS350 weighs 3795 lbs.
A 3.8L Genesis weighs 3748 lbs.

A GS350 is 190in long
A Genesis is 195.9in long

A GS350 has a 112.2 in wheelbase
A Genesis has a 115.6 in wheelbase

So, size and weight seem to be pretty similar. Just a thought. Also, if most of the performance, build quality, and luxury are comprable, why is it a bad thing that the Genesis costs less?

in a lexus Forum

This thread isn't in a Lexus exclusive forum. This is a shared thread located between Hyundai Genesis and Lexus GS forum, as it is so titled Lexus GS vs. Hyundai Genesis. It can also be located from a few other areas.
