Comparison Test: 2009 Hyundai Genesis 4.6 vs. 2008 Lexus GS 350 - Hyundai isn't shy about its targets for the Genesis. "While Genesis will compete for customers with cars like Lexus ES, Chrysler 300 and Cadillac CTS," the company stated in a press release about the car's pricing, "Genesis' performance capabilities and luxury features are comparable to sedans costing tens of thousands of dollars more." I agree with Drex...I honestly think the editor was biased since the previous full test posted better numbers with KDM suspension settings. Hyundai has stiffened the suspension for American taste.... Also I do think Hyundai could have picked better tires for the Genesis says either Bridgestone or Michelin instead of Dunlops. I hope the coupe will have more positive reviews. |

| Lexus really needs to something about their lineup. Most of their cars are always being bashed (for no good reason), and this article is not good news. As a former Lexus owner, I can testify to the extraordinary quality of their vehicles, plush is a word that comes to mind. Admittedly there are very few Lexus buyers who will be swayed by this comparison, the Hyundai drivers will feel good about their purchase but as someone said, its unlikely someone committed to the luxury models at that price range would change their mind. I for one will shop for a V8 from the Europeans or the Japanese, ONLY. Of all the existing V8s in the 40-50k range (base), the only one I find appealing is the Infiniti FX50. The G350/460, E class, 5 series, Infiniti M, although there are nice cars, but never been appealing to me. I guess its tough to be in the middle of real luxury (S Class) and perfomance, (335i). I have no pity for Lexus, they should do something to ensure they never lose in these pitiful comparisons, but bottomline is they lost, irrespective of what I think. | |

'What was a little interesting between Hyundai Genesis and Lexus GS 350 was that the V6 Lexus was actually faster than the V8 Genesis' This might be true in Edmunds run but the Genesis is quite capable of running a 5.5 in V8 configuration. Motor Trend achieved a 5.5 0-60 and 14.3 103mph quarter. Hyundai claims their tests avg'd 5.7 0-60. Of course you are going to get times on either side of that. At 42, I personally don't race my cars 0-60 or in quarter miles, so these aren't practical tests but they're used for comparison purposes. Daily driving feel and response is what most of us are looking for. When testing a vehicle, deciphering speed IMO comes from the sensation we receive from the torque, NVH, rigidity, and damping characteristics. What is most interesting about driving the Genesis, in either V6 or V8 offering, is the enhanced NVH dynamics. Hyundai's use of double laminated glass, enhanced torsional rigidity(14. 4% greater than a 5-Series), the extensive use of aluminum suspension components and insulation materials creates a 'muting' which sedates the Genesis. Hyundai's intentions in this is to lean more toward Lexus. Anyone who knows sedans in this category, and has driven the Genesis, knows Lexus was benchmarked. What I can't figure out is how Edmunds doesn't recognize this in their tests... even though the Genesis is actually decibels quieter. They rate the Lexus quieter and this is not accurate. The Genesis is not only competent in V6 or V8 forms(I have driven both extensively) but world-class in daily driving dynamics and nvh muting. Drive them and you'll know this. Just my 3 cents.

Every time a new car hits the market, it doesn't matter what it is, it wins the heart of Insideline editors. Also, regardless of the $7,000 price difference it's a fair comparison to the editors. Better yet, although the editors admit that the Lexus beats the Huyndai in performance and build quality, they still chose the Hyundai to be a better car. Well, that's why Edmunds.com is not considered as a reliable source of information for new car comparisons. Here is what Jermy Clarkson said on "The Good the Bad and the Ugly" that describes Insideline's thinking pretty well: "...Americans favor the cheap and the rubbish..."

Though you may feel that way and even though your entire cohort group of friends might feel that way, you need to remember that you represent only a very tiny fraction of opinion holders in the world and without some hard data or really good reasons to back up statements like that, your opinions mean NOTHING to me. And I wouldn't be surprised to find out that a huge majority on here agree with me on that one. But I'm not going to be so arrogant as to state that as an absolute fact. |

Replying to: dgs4 (Aug 19, 2008 5:29 pm) The Lexus 350 has been highly recommended by some of the car magazines as a better buy than the 460. Maybe I need to consider Lexus, Acura, Infiniti and give up on Hyundai. I did test drive two V-6's and found them lacking especially at anywhere near MSRP. Better than the Azera in most areas, but strangely lacking in others. Ride did not wallow, but every road impervection was transmitted to the driver's seat and steering wheel. What will the Genesis' be like at one or two years and 12 or 24,000 miles? With Lexus, you know. |
