Comparison Test: 2009 Hyundai Genesis 4.6 vs. 2008 Lexus GS 350 - Hyundai isn't shy about its targets for the Genesis. "While Genesis will compete for customers with cars like Lexus ES, Chrysler 300 and Cadillac CTS," the company stated in a press release about the car's pricing, "Genesis' performance capabilities and luxury features are comparable to sedans costing tens of thousands of dollars more." You just proved my point. When people were talking about the large cash discounts on the GS (which is normal for the current economy), you and other Lexus fanatics go all out defending there are no cash discounts offered whatsoever, yet you make such big deal for the little $$$ off on a Genesis by some dealer. You are in such denial here. |

Like I said earlier, I am not blindly praising the Genesis. Personally, I don't own either a Toyota/Lexus nor a Hyundai; I have no affiliation with either brands so I would like to think my interest/biases in either of them is min. Bottom line, I came away extremly impressed after my seat time in the Genesis, so much so I rated above the GS, price differences or not. While you don't have to share the same opinions as I do, at least be a little open-minded - not everything is strictly dictated by price or the brand name. The GS is generally about 7-10K (MSRP) above the Genesis, depending on trim and equipment, but to be frank, even if the gap was closer, the Genesis would still be the winner in my book. Still, both sedan are very good, both have room for improvements, however. You should be happy for the arrival of the Genesis. If anything, it just puts the other automakers on notice, and trust me they have. Now they have to work even harder to make their products better, which benefits you and me, and others.

The competitors are Lexus ES/GS, Buick Lucerne, Lincoln MKS, Chrysler 300 and Cadillac DTS. Toyota was worried about the Azera, Sonata and planned Veracruz three years ago per its CEO; how do you think they feel now about the Genesis? |

Replying to: carolinabob (Sep 14, 2008 1:02 pm) All Toyota and Honda products are overpriced and have been for years and Hyundai is taking advantage of it The Camry and Accord each sell about 400,000 cars / year These many buyers cannot be wrong in what they consider more valuable than others. These numbers do not support your claim that hyundai is taking any advantage of it. Check the true cost to own index. There's not much difference between a 2008 sonata and a 2008 accord although the camry was higher to own. This with the Sonata being a couple of thousands cheaper to buy initially. see for your self at http://www.edmunds.com/apps/cto/intro.do

Replying to: satyarg (Sep 13, 2008 5:55 pm) However, it seems that you are being a bit thick on this whole advertising issue. Have you ever heard the phrase "quick as lightning"? That does not mean that a fast person is the same thing as a lightning bolt. It is just an illustrative way to say that the person is fast. That's it. Almost any person can understand something when it is illustrated to them in a familiar manner. Hyundai is comparing the speed of a Genesis to a Porsche, the handling/braking numbers to BMW, and the sound system to a Rolls. These comparisons are not on a 1:1 basis. A Genesis is not a Rolls. It is also not a Porsche. But when you say Porsche, you understand "fast". When you say BMW, you understand that the car must handle well, and when you hear Rolls, you generally understand that the car has luxury features. Good grief, if there was a Volvo comparison for safety, would you still be confused? By the way, yes, I know that the Genesis got a 5 star crash rating in all 4 crash tests and the rollover test. I also can recite all of the top flight safety equipment that the Genesis brings. Does that mean that it's the same car as a S80? No, it just says, hey, I am a safe car. Say it with me now. I own a Lexus and I want to continue to feel as though the extra $10,000 to $30,000 was worth something. Dude, just enjoy your car. A really nice Hyundai coming in to the world does not dismiss the validity of any other brand. It simply offers the world another great choice to spend it's money on. |
