Price is NEVER my primary concern, but rather how well I like the car and what it has to offer. That is why I got an Azera instead of a Lexus ES or Acura TL or Infiniti G35. BTW, the ES is too much like a Camry.

Lexus dealers around here offer no more than $1,500 off the GS models.
BTW, the GS is rated low by Consumer Reports (04/08) and Motor Trend (09/08). Re: Genesis, MT said "Lexus should be worried, truly." And I don't think they were referring to the ES series. They gave GS 2 stars, Azera 3 and Genesis 3.5.
I came close to getting an Acura RL and if had to replace my car right now, probably would be it - if price is right. Only about 6,000 were sold last year. Has never done well, small, AWD doesn't really do a lot, poor MPG, competitors are generally better equipped. It is a nice car, but just not quite there for the top of the line Acura.

The ad isn't about comparing the actual car to a Boxster.

This ad is about using a name (Porsche) that is known for speed and performance and making the point that the Genesis is in the ballpark with that type of car in that aspect. Not everyone is going to make a spreadsheet with performance specs on it, but most people will understand what you mean when you say that a car is as fast or faster than a Porsche.

Just like the Lexicon sound system is mentioned with the Phantom. The Genesis and the Phantom are not competitors, but when you hear Rolls it puts you in the right mind to think more highly of the Genesis.

Before I even respond to your actual post, you might want to figure out who exactly said what. You implied as if I had said the GS "can be had for a $7,000 discount off MSRP" - notice how I put that in quotation, because I never said such a thing - go back and check who did, I'd bet you it wasn't me

Second why are you being so defensive? So what if a car is being sold with 7K off, all of the luxury models are taking hit with the economy as it is. Does it make you feel better if everyone said every Lexus model is selling at MSRP?

I am not being defensive. all I am saying is it is unreasonable to compare the economics with a GS because a Genesis can be Had for as little as $ 349.00/ month with 2100 down.

You can never dream of having a GS/ 5 series/RL or any porshe which Hyundai compares itself with for that kind of money .So these are in different leagues.
I test drove the Hyundai few weeks back and within weeks the value of this car has stumbled to leasing at the above rate or buying it for $30750.00 including Destination.

That proves how most buyers feel it is worth irrespective of what an edmunds editor or Hyundai feels its competition is.

Oh yeah

hyundai puts in a multi million dollar ad campaign not to compare but to educate most people who are ignorant of the fact how slow a boxter can be compares to a full size sedan costing $30000.00. LOL

THATS THE MOST HILARIOUS INTERPRETATION I HAVE EVER SEEN

I totally agree with you.
The price reductions prove once again the real competitors for the genesis are Avalon/Accord/C300/MKZ and the Maxima.Hyundai just wants to differentiate it bycomparing with the Luxury segment and the reviewer just played ball .

Hyundai has a history of doing this first with the Kia Amanti ( benchmarking it against a Benz and then reducing the price by $7000.00 in two months time) then they repeated it again with the New Sonata ( history knows what buyers thought of the comparision ADs with Camry ). They repeat price reductions with the Veracruz , Entourage and Now with Genesis initial discounts not offered but starting to offer discounts and low lease offers.

The price reductions

What price reductions? Send me a news release that says Hyundai has reduced the price of the Genesis.

Now with Genesis initial discounts not offered but starting to offer discounts and low lease offers.

You do know that's usually the case with most cars, right? You do also know Hyundai wasn't the first to have introductory lease offers, right? And just so you know, the bulk of purchases in the luxury segement is via lease.

Some misc. points:

New Sonata ( history knows what buyers thought of the comparision ADs with Camry

Call the police because Hyundai has committed an offense by comparing to the mighty Camry, interesting it just so happen to be Sonata's main competitor. Oh wait, let me guess, you and satyarg will argue it's cheaper so they are not in the same league...

C300

You do know that's the C-Class right?

I totally agree with you.

Nothing new on that front.

So you went to one dealer and the dealer decided to knock down the price of the Genesis. Good for the consumers then. This is absolutely not the doing of Hyundai, just so you know. In my area, the Genesis is still being sold at or around MSRP by most dealers.

What's wrong with the Genesis being cheaper? A price set does not always define the competitors, and this is a very good example - somewhat similar can be drawn to the first LS. If you've actually examined the Genesis closely, from front to back, inside and out, if you've actually driven the Genesis with the GS/5er back-to-back-to-back, you would have given more kudos to Hyundai, for what they have done. I know I am. Is it a perfect car? Absolutely not, but then again, none of them are; there are pluses and minuses in all of them. For me, it really comes down to preferences, and seeing as how the 5er rides too firm for me, while the I rate the GS as being too soft, the Genesis felt as the most balanced of the three.
