Comparison Test: 2009 Hyundai Genesis 4.6 vs. 2008 Lexus GS 350 - Hyundai isn't shy about its targets for the Genesis. "While Genesis will compete for customers with cars like Lexus ES, Chrysler 300 and Cadillac CTS," the company stated in a press release about the car's pricing, "Genesis' performance capabilities and luxury features are comparable to sedans costing tens of thousands of dollars more." And I don't think they were referring to the ES series. They gave GS 2 stars, Azera 3 and Genesis 3.5. I came close to getting an Acura RL and if had to replace my car right now, probably would be it - if price is right. Only about 6,000 were sold last year. Has never done well, small, AWD doesn't really do a lot, poor MPG, competitors are generally better equipped. It is a nice car, but just not quite there for the top of the line Acura. |

Replying to: satyarg (Sep 13, 2008 4:22 am) This ad is about using a name (Porsche) that is known for speed and performance and making the point that the Genesis is in the ballpark with that type of car in that aspect. Not everyone is going to make a spreadsheet with performance specs on it, but most people will understand what you mean when you say that a car is as fast or faster than a Porsche. Just like the Lexicon sound system is mentioned with the Phantom. The Genesis and the Phantom are not competitors, but when you hear Rolls it puts you in the right mind to think more highly of the Genesis.

I test drove the Hyundai few weeks back and within weeks the value of this car has stumbled to leasing at the above rate or buying it for $30750.00 including Destination. That proves how most buyers feel it is worth irrespective of what an edmunds editor or Hyundai feels its competition is. |

Hyundai has a history of doing this first with the Kia Amanti ( benchmarking it against a Benz and then reducing the price by $7000.00 in two months time) then they repeated it again with the New Sonata ( history knows what buyers thought of the comparision ADs with Camry ). They repeat price reductions with the Veracruz , Entourage and Now with Genesis initial discounts not offered but starting to offer discounts and low lease offers.

You do also know Hyundai wasn't the first to have introductory lease offers, right? And just so you know, the bulk of purchases in the luxury segement is via lease. Some misc. points: New Sonata ( history knows what buyers thought of the comparision ADs with Camry Call the police because Hyundai has committed an offense by comparing to the mighty Camry, interesting it just so happen to be Sonata's main competitor. Oh wait, let me guess, you and satyarg will argue it's cheaper so they are not in the same league... C300 You do know that's the C-Class right? I totally agree with you. Nothing new on that front. |

A price set does not always define the competitors, and this is a very good example - somewhat similar can be drawn to the first LS. If you've actually examined the Genesis closely, from front to back, inside and out, if you've actually driven the Genesis with the GS/5er back-to-back-to-back, you would have given more kudos to Hyundai, for what they have done. I know I am. Is it a perfect car? Absolutely not, but then again, none of them are; there are pluses and minuses in all of them. For me, it really comes down to preferences, and seeing as how the 5er rides too firm for me, while the I rate the GS as being too soft, the Genesis felt as the most balanced of the three.
