It's almost hard to write: Lexus vs. Hyundai. That's the New York Yankees taking on the Albuquerque Isotopes — same game, different leagues. It's pitting an exalted brand name to which millions aspire, up against the bargain brand millions settle for. And yet despite that, putting the 2008 Lexus GS 350 up against Hyundai's audacious new 2009 Genesis 4.6 in a luxury sedan throw-down has resulted in one of the closest finishes ever in an Inside Line heads-up comparison test. Replying to: joe97 (Aug 18, 2008 4:44 pm) Interesting article. As a 2008 Lexus GS350 owner who test drive the V6 Genesis, I agree (especially the power difference). When you factor in the fact that I negotiated a $7,000 discount on the Lexus, I definately feel like I bought the right car.

Replying to: joe97 (Aug 18, 2008 4:44 pm) It's interesting that every auto journal matches the Genesis against MB or BMW or Lexus which has way higher price tags even though hyundai executives told that the real world(not benchmarked) competitors of the Genesis would be 300C, G8, and Caddy. IMO, It’s natural that the Genesis should be slightly inferior to Lexus and the likes considering the huge chasm in the price line. The Genesis is the car that gives 90% level of performance for 60~70% level of cost. The margin, 20~30%, is the value that the Genesis brings to its owner. But, car journals just frequently talk about the 10% gap in performance. Surely they would write quite different stories when matching the Genesis with 300C or CTS or G8.(or Avalon, Maxima..)

Replying to: joe97 (Aug 18, 2008 4:44 pm) What was a little interesting between Hyundai Genesis and Lexus GS 350 was that the V6 Lexus was actually faster than the V8 Genesis and got over 5 MPG average better gas mileage. The Lexus was about 7K more expensive, but I think you can get really good deals on the Lexus right now while many Hyundai dealership are tacking on additional dealer profit. Based on those test results, you would probably save about $800/year on fuel with the Lexus, which is something else to consider. Of course the other point that would put some people on the Lexus side is that the "name" recognition and status of Lexus is heads above Hyundai. All else being equal, I'm sure most would choose the established Lexus over the un-tested Genesis. There are also many other points to consider on both sides, including the warranty, customer service and maintenance costs and convenience. Replying to: ricwhite (Aug 18, 2008 7:52 pm) Well it was a V8 vs. V6, to be fair; so the fuel efficiency drop was expected while still returned very respective fuel economy. The added weight also didn't help, as the V8 puts the car in the 2 ton range. I was a little surprised Edmunds only ran the V8 5.9 seconds to 60, with most other tests came in at 5.6-5.7 (M/T had 5.5 secs). It is worth noting Toyota's V6 is very good. Regardless, this is a victory in many ways for the Genesis, and Hyundai; obviously from the actual results, but also further proof that Hyundai has taken another step to prove as a legitimately player in its newest segment. Side note, despite Edmunds' explanations, I would like to see Genesis V6 vs. GS350, for example, or Genesis V8 vs. GS460 instead. Side note 2 - as in a reversal of fortune, it seems - with buyers getting never-seen-before discounts on the prestige models, while the Genesis has stayed close to MSRP (so far) - from a corporate standpoint, this speaks volume with regards to the continued pursuit of Hyundai's already vast improvement in resale values. Even if the Genesis line (sedan and coupe) doesn't succeed, the level of intangibles it would benefit the brand (and rest of line) is hard to quantify.

Replying to: joe97 (Aug 18, 2008 4:44 pm) What I find odd is that they tested the GS350 against the Genesis 4.6 claiming a better match. The Genesis 3.8 would have also been just as good because the 290 ponies it pumps out is on regular fuel and the 303 the GS350 puts out is on premium. Fill the tank on the Genesis with premium and the output is much closer to the GS350. So the price difference would have been even greater going with the 3.8 w/Tech package as opposed to the 4.6 w/Tech package. Replies to this message: osaka75 (Aug 19, 2008 1:55 pm)

I realize we don't have data on how well the Hyundai will hold up for trade-in value but I figure it will do slightly better but not significantly better than current Hyundai models. If this is so, a used Genesis will be a steal in a couple of years.

Normally edmunds has good write ups on all autos. But ,on the above either the writer must be working for Lexus or really not like Hyundai and I will, in detail explain why. First the article takes the v6 Lexus and compares it to a v8 Hyundai ( so they can keep price comparisons down) and show better mileage for the Lexus. The Hyundai cost approx. $42,000. The base GS460 v8 has a base of $52,020, probable around $60000 with equivalent extras. Car and driver puts the Hyundai at 0 to 60 in 5.6 seconds and 14.1 at 103 in the quarter mile. edmunds has no info of this lexus in performance specs, but probable about the same. On gas mileage the Hyundai EPA is better. As the Lexus v8 only gets 17/ 24 -- not as good as the Hyundai . The Hyundai has more interior room and a larger trunk , gets better skid pad results , shorter breaking and is probable just as quiet as the Lexus-- but edmunds didnt say. Also I believe the v6 Lexus requires premium gas. And needless to say Hyundai has a better warrentee . And this is Hyundai's first attempt . How would the 1989 Lexus compare with this model Hyundai. So lets wrap this up . For about $20000 less than a comparable Lexus , you get a Hyundai that gets better gas milege , excellent quality , larger interior , larger truck, better skid pad results ,,shorter breaking results, probable just as quiet at speed and can run on regular gas . I know its hard to match Lexus 100% . But Hyundai's first try is - 90 to 95 % as good .Probable better than the Lexus first try. I think this artical should be rewritten , by someone more knowledgeable or impartcal. Obviously this was a hurry-up get it done artical . It misrepresents the Hyundai product and mis informs the public. You Guys write excellent --- Someones not meeting your writing and content quality standards. Respectfully submitted.

I said this on the thread regarding the first test, but it probably is worth repeating here: were these cars fueled at the same place? The original Edmunds V-8 test had the same time running Regular and this time was supposedly on Premium. Plus other tests have come in at 5.5-5.7, as joe97 already noted. Have to wonder what's going on here. Perhaps was something wrong with this particular example? Not good if so, but I sure would like to see a 2nd test with a different 4.6.
