It's a perfect summer's day, and we're putting the 2008 BMW 128i Coupe through its paces in the hills above Montecito, just south of Santa Barbara. The sun is high in the sky and there's a light on-shore breeze as we blast down a narrow road lined with olive trees and dotted with magnificent Tuscan-style homes. Approaching a 90-degree left-hander, we come down hard on the brakes and then punch the throttle. As soon as we're through the corner, we're eager for the next one. Small (good), heavy (bad), token backseats, noisy and stiff runflats (very bad), premium fuel requirement (bad), low twenties mpg (bad for a small car probably related to awkward wind profile and weight). Otherwise excellent. BMWs are special. I will wait for the hatchback which hopefully will offer complete fold down back seats and somehow better fuel economy. Excellent price for a BMW. So promising but misses the mark. Hard to understand why its fuel economy is essentially the same as the 135i which is 250 lbs heavier and has the turbo V6. I had hoped the 128i was for the more pragmatic (and more traditional) non-M series BMW enthusiasts who don't require sub 5 second 0-60 mph to enjoy the wonderful dynamics. I have a 128Ci, which is the heaviest model and I can get over 30mpg on the highways here in Colorado and the West. What I do find is that gas consumption can vary dramatically depending on how you drive. If you're a tailgating, hard braking type, knock 30% off the figures. If you're rational and reasonable you should get 10% more which is what I usually do. I have a review of the 128Ci here on Edmunds with my real world mileage. I love the car and find it is a good balance of acceleration, mileage and comfort. You can change any of those qualities depending upon the options and model you buy. A 135 with sport suspension will be more of a true sportscar, while a 128i or Ci is a sporty cruiser which still retains the excellent BMW "sport sedan" handling. So, order accordingly and drive well.

Just to clarify, the engine configuration of the 128, 328, 135, and 335 are all inline 6 cylinders, not V6 engines. As pointed out the x35 cars are twin turbo. The x28 are non-turbo. All of these engines are 3.0 liters displacement.
