Your points No 1 & 2 are perfectly valid because they represent your feelings or appreciations.

Point 3 is less valid because in fact there is LESS maintenance and repair needed on a Prius than other non-hybrid vehicles. In addition in both the CR and JD Power rankings the Prius was the most reliable vehicle in it's class ( least problems/repairs ).

In terms of overall cost, the TCO calculator done here on Edmunds is a good estimator, the lower initial cost of new vehicles does favor the less expansive Fit for a 5 yr ownership period. That's not ever been a question. However economically for that same 5 yr ownership period if one was looking ONLY for the least costly vehicle then a 2-3 year old Prius is a better choice than a new Fit. Same price as a new Fit but less maintenance and less fuel usage.

Next time you're in want to compare the Fit & Prius you might want to hit your secondary tripometer to zero and drive about 11-14 miles and think about "that difference" in milage per gallon. Then you will appreciate the added miles you get from a Prius. By the way....I have gotten over 546 miles on a single tank of gas from my Prius and love it. Anyone know what a Fit gets to a tank? Just curious.

11-14 miles per gallon difference just does not make sense for a car (Prius) that is so much more expensive than a Fit. I would have to drive it on the order of 100K miles to just break even. Did the math before buying, and the Fit wins, no contest. The Prius is nice if you want to make an green "statement". But if you want real savings, you are better off with the Fit.

Another way to look at it is, if you are averaging only 42 mpg with a Prius in mostly city driving, you aren't really trying.

Now that a Fit with VSA and automatic is $19.4k, the savings of the Fit vs. the Prius are smaller than they used to be. Unless you can live with a base Fit, w/o amenities like cruise or a key safety feature, VSA (ESC).

Again to repeat....this New vs New has never been in question. To take this to an extreme a New bicycle beats both autos.

However a 2 to 3 y.o. Prius easily beats the New Fit in room, performance, amenities, fuel consumption AND the Prius costs less over whatever time frame you might want to choose.

If one is going to compare two so dissimilar vehicles as a New Prius and a New Fit then it's just as valid to compare two dissimilar vehicles such as a Used Prius and a New Fit. At least they are equal in cost initially.

Just be sure to add Nav to the cost of the Prius. Because the Fit with VSA also has a Nav system. The Prius goes up a lot in price when it has Nav, *IF* you can find a Prius with Nav and assuming you can buy a Prius at MSRP.

Now that the '09 Prius' are in and the economy has slowed there's plenty of supply along with discounts.

You have to buy a Navi to get VSA?

Buyers of cars may not want to change driving habits in order to achieve the numbers that are hyped about.

The average is 32mpg for the Fit in mostly city driving (5mpg higher than EPA estimates, actually), while they only got 42mpg in the Prius (6mpg below the EPA estimates). If the difference was 27mpg vs. 48mpg, as the EPA states it should be, that would be a lot more complelling of a case for the much more expensive Prius.

This reminds me of my dad, who drives the same way in every car, and wants a car that will deliver good mileage despite his driving style, which is admittedly pretty racy, seeing 5000rpm on a regular day once or twice is the norm. His Civic delivers 30mpg in his commute, 6 mpg better than he gets when driving mom's 263 horsepower Taurus. He doesn't drive the Civic easier to squeeze extra mileage out of it because it is an economy car. He just drives it how he always drives.

In the Honda, yes. Isn't that nuts?
