not to impugn your driving skills. I've just never been in a situation where I felt the Fit was underpowered. Sometimes you gotta step on the gas and kick the rev up to 4500 or 5000, it's fine. I do 80 in a 75, 72 in a 65. When I'm not paying attention I'll drift up to 85 before remembering to put on cruise control.

The Fit is quick enough off the line to make dicey left turns or shoot across a busy street. It does just fine up to 85 mph (can't speak above that). Sometimes it lacks low end torque if you're at like 2000 rpms going 45mph and then need to accelerate, but that's what the shifters are for.

Perhaps if you could describe where is actually is that you live, and in what situations you felt that you couldn't keep up with traffic, or were placed in a dangerous situation because of lack of acceleration, it might help clear things up.

Now if I had spent a few years driving something with a lot of horses under the hood, maybe my perception might be different. I agree with some small cars you feel like you're driving a roller skate (a trip from chicago to cedar point in an echo made me feel that way), but I've never felt that in a fit.

Yes I do sell them and one of the most important bits of information to gather from the very beginning is where does the buyer place him or her self in the price spectrum. Are they $15000 buyers? Are they $25000 buyers? Are they $30000 buyers?

The buyers know where they place themselves. It's just a matter of finding out that info in order to not waste their time and to show them the vehicle that fits their needs the best.

One of the first questions is 'Are you just looking to minimize your total cost of driving?' If so 'Are you looking at just NEW or both NEW and USED?' If the answer is 'NO, I want a certain level of amenities.' That's an entirely different route.

Well, you blew it. Instead of showing off by far the biggest advantage Fit has over Prius -- its smooth, easy to use manual gearbox -- you picked the retarded automatic version. The biggest reason NOT to buy a Prius is lack of manual transmission.

Fit is the only Honda I would buy.

I think you are on the right track with, "Are you looking to minimize your total cost of driving?" Yes, some buyers have a certain purchase budget in mind (price or payment) and that is very important to them. So if they only want to spend around $15k, no sense in trying to sell them a new Prius. But others are looking for lowest TCO, or maybe the best value in a car that meets their needs--no matter how much it costs. (This includes those who want to make a statement to their friends and neighbors like, "See, I drive a hybrid--I am greeen!" They are perfect candidates for the Prius.) Anyway, the buyers looking for lowest TCO or the best value in a car that meets their needs could be considering both the Fit and Prius.

The point is, there are buyers out there who would consider both the Fit and Prius.

I just didn't feel the power was sufficient and I'm driving a Honda Civic Si which has very little torque but I have more confidence with it. So I'm not driving torque monsters here.
You're happy with your Fit. I'm hoping the new one will be better.

First, let me say this thread is a hoot.

It really seems that more people aren't able to acknowledge an opinion different than their own, or they get bent out of shape if others might think their car purchase was potentially ill informed.

I'm chiming in as a consumer who cross-shopped a $15K and $25K car. We wanted a fuel efficient, third car that could haul kayaks and bikes (via a roof rack) So our short list was a Scion xD and the Prius. For my taste, the Prius was boring and appliance like, and my many friends that drive them rarely break 45 MPG. For the lower purchase price, more interesting styling, and more functional interior, the xD won hands down.

Our other two cars are an '06 Civic EX and an '05 STS V6

I'm not a math whiz, but the extra 10K is in my bank account earning interest, which helps offset and MPG disparity between the two.

Just my .02

However a used Prius would have cost you less overall if that was your only criteria. If you didn't like the vehicle then that's another analysis, but not apropos to this specific discussion.

Between the Fit $16000 and the xD $16000 and a 3 y.o. Prius $16000 the latter costs the least over whatever time frame your want to choose.

Unless the timeframe involves a replacement of the Prius' battery pack?

Prius price premium is for its ride quality by toronado455

The Prius rides much better than the Fit, so that is something to consider. Also, Fit may have more cargo VOLUME, but it surely doesn' t have the same length of load floor as the Prius. So if you need to carry longer objects, not just tall ones, the Prius wins there too. The Prius is just a larger car than the Fit. So this is really an apples/oranges comparison.

This comparo is a bit silly anyway since both these cars are on their way out. I wouldn't purchase either since their replacements are just around the corner.

Compare the next gen Fit (which should have improved ride quality) with the next gen Prius when they come out. Or compare the upcoming Honda dedicated hybrid with the next gen Prius when both of those cars come out. Honda's new dedicated hybrid is going to cost less than the next gen Prius. And then maybe we can have our cake and eat it too.

But won't the 2009 Fit still be considerably smaller than the 2010 Prius?

Also... if the cargo you are carrying is pretty flat, then maybe the Prius can carry longer cargo. But the Prius is so slanted in back, with a fairly high load floor, while the boxier Fit can carry items that are both long and tall. Plus it can carry smaller tall items in front of the rear seats, with the cushions flipped up. The Ginzu knife of hatchbacks!
