2003 Neutral Safety Switch Issues

My 2003 Chevy 3500 Express Access wouldn't start for work on Friday. The gear selector showed it was in 2nd gear. Had it towed to the dealership where it was determined the neutral safety switch and both harnesses had to be replaced. They also stated that they reprogrammed and updated the module. Is this a common problem with this vehicle? I requested my old parts and the harnesses had literally fused (I was able to pull them apart with vise grips and a bit of effort) to the switch. This was a $680.00 repair. I was out of warranty and am sick of all the electronic failures with this vehichle. It's unfortunate, because I truely enjoy the access package.
