I am considering to purchase a basic 1997 Malibu with a V6 3.1 Engine. Recently, the seller replaced the intake manifold and rear springs; added new brakes, new tires, and a new battery. It has a 110,000 miles on it. I have been reading reviews about this car. Some people think it is junk, while others have loved the car--but recommended that it has to be maintained. My last car was a 1995 Buick Regal. My feelings about my Buick are the same to those who hate the Malibu. I paid 5000 for my Buick in 2003 and probably put in close to that amount of money just to keep it going. The frame is rotting and It is no longer safe to drive. A friend of mine purchased a Honda and paid 3,200 and put 2,000 into the car. Can anyone offer some advice? I would appreciate it. Thank you.

Be sure to listen carefully to the engine when it's COLD. Must have sat for at least an hour without running. The 3.1's are notorious for piston slap, which sounds like a diesel engine running when cold. As the engine warms up it does get quieter. The dealer removed and ripped apart my engine to replace 3 pistons under warranty on my 03 when I complained of this noise. I dont have the car anymore but the noise was starting to come back before the car was totaled in an accident. Other than that, I liked the car. I wouldnt buy any GM with a 3.1 since any I've heard, no matter what it's in have the piston slap noise to some degree and it's got to hurt resale value at the very least. |
