My '86 e28 535i that I bought in 2000 ended up costing me a fortune, including a new dealer installed transmission (the electronic auto, which I now know often failed after 60k miles). Fortunately I knew it had issues and my purchase price reflected that. Overall my total ownership cost after 5 years probably wasn't more than if I had purchased a gently used Honda that I would have had to finance. Still, too many people buy a 'bargain' BMW/Audi/Mercedes with 100k+ miless and then are shocked when a 'simple' repair costs them twice what a Toyota or Honda would.
