When you're an eye-catching overachiever, everyone focuses on your looks. So when BMW's current 7 Series debuted in 2001, much of its innovation was overlooked in the controversy caused by its styling.

"Part of the 750i's enthusiastic nature can be attributed to the 400-horsepower twin-turbo 5.0-liter V8 shared with the X6..."

The twin-turbo V8 used in the upcoming 7 series and currently in the X6 xDrive50 is actually a 4.4 liter engine producing around 400hp and 442 ft-lbs of torque.

The 7... by drewsrx

The S-Class will always be the benchmark in this segment. The LS will always be the sales leader in this segment. The upcoming A8 will make this new 7-Series look completely outdated. BMW shot themselves in the foot by making this new car so boring looking. At least the old one had presence and controversy surrounding it. This car will have neither IMO.

I rather liked the previous couple version of the 7, including the first Banglized one.

This latest version looks fine, but too much like a Volvo S80 instead of a BMW. I really miss the old corporate face with the twin kidney grill and 4 headlamps.

Nothing beats a two-generations-ago 2001 7 series with the sport package and those fabulous looking rims.

I thought the V8 produced 450HP.

Nice, but if given an opportunity for one of these fantastic cars, I would pick a MB S550 with the AMG package without thinking twice!

"...two-generations-ago 2001 7 series..."? Come-on now. I challenge you to find any BMW or European car 2 generations old that is still running. In my area there are always dozens of current BMW 3 series out. But it takes a few weeks before you ever sight a previous gen one. The cars last only as long as warranty. Resale remains high but you lose out in repair costs.

the people in your town must be really hard on cars then. I see 90's 3,5, and 7 series all over the Chicago area. I even see the occasional 80's E28 5 series, although not more than once a month.

What happens is that the 7 series depreciate rather heavily, and then fall into the hands of owners who can afford to buy them after 10 years and lots of miles, but haven't a prayer of being able to maintain them.

It's the first owner who drives it through warranty who gets all the good times.

And I can just about guarantee you the new 7 will have all the electrical and
mechanical problems just like the old ones. German engineers do not look at
failure rates in a particular system and find a remedy. The 2001 7 series has the
same problems as the 1998. They are a joy to drive but are the biggest POS on the market.

Well statistically the longer a model is on the market, the more it improves. And warranties are better than 10 years ago, too as well as CPO programs.
