?? 08 G35 or 07 BMW 335i ?? by west_tx_girl

I have done all of the research I can on these cars. I have driven both (several times). I have gotten dealer quotes and searched the internet for good pricing. I've checked the impact of each car on my insurance.

I'm still very undecided about which car I should buy - 08 G35 or 07 335i? My favorite performing car is the BMW - it is a joy to drive, but the interior is underwhelming and the iDrive confuses the heck out of me and I'm an engineer. My favorite interior is clearly the G. It drives great, has great features and I've loved my 2003 G35 from the day I bought it.

I have prices for both around $37k - any thoughts or suggestions?

Why would you buy an 07 335i? Is it used? Even if it's new, it's already 2 years old since the 09's are virtually upon us. REAL deals can be had now for new 08's!!

I had an 07 G35x and got my 335xi two months ago - I've never looked back...the 335xi, while more expensive, offers far more than the G, especially fit/finish, performance, power and resale. Based on your 2nd paragraph, sounds like you're on the fence and can't part with a Japanese product! My 335 is the very first German car I've ever bought - all the rest since 1978 have been Japanese except for a 1970 Camaro - it's taken me that long to wake up and realize the quality of a fine car - this time, German. I'm sold on them.

Z,
Did you sell ES also? BTW, what was the reason to sell your G35?

No, still have it. Always wanted a coupe with AWD; Infiniti doesn't have it in the G37 and I saw the 335xi - drove one and was taken by it. The G is a nice car but terrible gas mileage and I don't consider a 4 door a sports car - it's more a family car with a big engine IMO. I'm getting consistently 22-25 mpg city/hiway and 28 hiway in the 335; much better than the G plus incredibly different handling.

Interestingly I read in R&T (I think) or one of the other car mags the other day that Infiniti will be coming out with a G37X for next model year (LOL!). (Isn't that the way it always is?) Regardless, I'm still quite pleased with the 335.

Congrats on your new bimmer. I totally agree with you on gas and handling, no comparisons. Even if they come out with G37X w/ 7 speed auto, you are better off with BMW in terms of fit/finish, quality of materials used, gas, handling, resale value and the list goes on. G is good value car but if one can afford G and it's gas mileage than they are better off buying BMW, good choice. Have fun.
BTW, I am happy that I did not go for G instead of ES. I had issues with ES but they have been taken care by the dealer. It is not sport/family car but a decent luxury family car. Looking forward for the new (2009) BMW or 2010 RX.

Whereas I am one to admit that 335i drivers can climb on a pedastal and proclaim their cars have class leading perfomance, I am hesitant to give them the fit/finish, quality of materials title. 3 series have fit & finish and quality of materials that are at par with the G and probably Acura TL. If you want to talk fit & finish and quality of materials, that title goes to Lexus IS and maybe 09 Audi A4.

The G's resale is pretty good as well, I believe it won an award of some sort for this. Bottom line, 335i has great perfomance (including handling), but thats pretty much it.

BMW interior is too plain jane for that price for sure. As for I-Drive...since you'll have the car for 3 yrs +, I wouldn't sweat it. It's like any new software for your computer....it has an acclimation period. Professional car testers spend a few days with a car and always give the i-drive a bad rap...kinda like judging a book by the first few pages. Wait for the new G with the extra gear or two though for mpg...my 07S is embarassingly thirsty.

Who wants to bet you can get this fully loaded for the price of a stripped down335i sedan.

Who wants to bet C/D is going to come up with some flimsy excuse (like bad manual transmission) to ensure their favored 335i comes first

Who wants to bet the 328i is going to be considered better than the G37 sedan with 328hp plus more (much much more)

I cant wait to see these auto magazine guys try to talk their way out of this one.

To those wise enough to see the light, keep us posted, we will be joining you soon:)

In the spirit of the epiphany of the clintons this year I feel the need to point out what is hard to see if you are on the receiving end of it...bias in journalism. "Objectivity" is hard to have in this day and age. The BMW will always win the comparisons (And the owners will celebrate)...even the ones where the car has mechanical failure (Twice ! !) or gets its ass whipped in EVERY measurable test (328 vs G). In short....save your breath and enjoy your car : ) Although I must say...the 3 series front end feels SPECTACULAR (Still not 50K worth though)
