About two weeks ago I notices a leak behind my rear passenger wheel. A few days later a loud clanking sound appeared as well as occassional grinding. The clanking occurs at slower speeds and the grinding at faster speeds. Any idea what the cause is? Rear differential or axle?

I had a similar problem in my '00 Jimmy. It would have the same symptoms when I came off the highway and the rear end was heated up. I found that the pinion seal was leaking and that it was low on gear oil. I replaced the oil and a new gasket and the problem went away. Sounds like you will need to replace the seals in the end of the axle as well. Best to do everything at the same time because you will need to slide the axle shafts out.
