The leasing debacle reminds me of the sub prime debacle. Two sides of the same coin. Easy credit for people who wish to live beyond their means.

The "claim" is that leasors have stricter credit requirements for leasees vs. buyers, but I wonder if in practice this was the case in the past?

Does anyone know if the default rate on leases has increased at all?

Sometimes it's just not possible to be "nice" while being honest. Good for Suze; while I am sometimes put off at her "over the top" persona, I find myself usually agreeing with her message. This time I must say, she is "Spot on!"

The person she was lecturing did, of course, ignore her advice and kept giving reasons why she HAD to lease a new Range Rover.

She was much nicer to the 11 year old girl who wanted to buy a $109 doll to add to her already 5-doll collection. She was "denied" but with a much sweeter demeanor.

I love her. She makes so much sense. That's why I drive a 91 Accord that I have to push, I canceled my electricity so I could max out my 401k but now I can only surf the internet from the library.

Next I cancel the water so I can save $300 every two months. True the bucket in the bathroom smells but I have much more to save now.

What always happens:

Tony Tightwad: "I'm retiring in three weeks! I have several million dollars in my 401K! My other investments are doing well! I have a $50,000 emergency fund! My house is paid-off! I have no credit card debt! My 1990 Buick is still running fine! My wife and I are going to take that dream vacation with all the change I saved for the last 15 years!

OW! WHAT'S WRONG?

LEFT...SIDE...OF...BO...DY......FEELS...........NUMB! UNGHHHHH!!!!"

Mrs. Tightwad: "Tony was such a good man! GIRLS, WE'RE GOIN' TO VEGAS!"

Freddie Freeloader: "Dang! The company's forcing me into retirement! I All I have is $2,500 in my checking account. The house is in foreclosure. I'm maxed-out on all my cards! My 2006 Kia is being repossessed! My %&! of a wife is divorcing me! I hope I qualify for food stamps and have enough Social Security so I can rent an efficiency at the Ghetto Arms Apartments!"

The Freeloader Family 35 years from now: "Happy Birthday to you! Happy Birthday to you! Happy 100th Birthday, dear Freddie..."

Well she DOES own 5 houses outright with no mortgages, so I doubt she's livin' poor.

But you're right of course, "saving" money at the cost of basic decent living makes no sense, nor does cost-cutting on 91 octane gas on a high performance luxury car.

Did I ever tell you about The Theory of Inferior Ice Cream"?

It goes something like this:

What is the purpose of ice cream?
Pleasure.
It's not good for you, it's not nutritious, none of that.

Sooooo, buying inferior, bad-tasting ice cream to save money becomes, essentially, a meaningless act.

I couldn't agree more.

This is something I've really only come to fully realize within the past 10 years due to dietary health-related restrictions. I can "cheat" once in a while. Because it is more of a rarity for me, I will only cheat if it is truly worth it.

My wife and I have grown to adopt this philosophy in other parts of our existence, too. Life is too short not to enjoy yourself. Why bother with something if, in the end, your reaction is "eh"?

Hey, how do you like your car? Eh.
You happy with that house you financed for 30 years? Eh.
How's the food at that restaurant you've visited 12 times? Eh.
Are you happy with your long distance service? Eh.

For me, owning a reliable newer car (that I can deduct a major part of for business) with stability control, curtain airbags, and whatever the newest safety features are, is worth the small monthly payment.

just announced it also had major charges to write off for lower-than-expected residuals in the last quarter, which substantially ate into its bottom line. It expects that to continue through this year, with profits down 1/3 or more as a result. Maybe they WILL be the next one to leave the lease business, although they are going to have to offer some WHOPPER cash deals to keep those customers coming in...

I wonder how Honda will respond to what is becoming something of a trend. After all, most of Honda's incentives are in the form of promo leases...they sometimes use factory to dealer cash, but NEVER factory to customer cash. The leases are most common. Are Honda residuals holding up, I wonder?

BMW is in the enviable position of being a highly successful marketer in the luxury sport sedan market, the entry-level luxury market, and the prestige market in general. What they will lose by ceasing leasing are only those buyers who absolutely cannot afford to own a BMW and want one anyway. What % of their market that represents, I don't know. Maybe BMW doesn't know either.
