The manufacturers' movement away from leasing and toward purchasing is an attempt to shift lower than predicted used car values from the manufacturer to the consumer.

In 3 years if your car turns out to be a POS that you can't get rid of you take the hit in trading it in for a dime.

I completely forgot about Saab. They always had some sort of lease special going on--sometimes the deal was merely fair, other times it seemed heavily subsidized. If there are no more Saab leases, it could mean the end of the brand. Given their low resale and reputation for poor quality, I can't imagine many people would want to buy one outright.

I think Chrysler sees the residual values going down, especially on the big cars and trucks they're known for. Chrysler is going to have trouble selling new cars/trucks for the next three years . So they don't want the used ones coming back and adding to the horror (too many cars/trucks, and not enough customers). The way things are going at Chrysler these days, they might not be around, when the leases are up.

The leasing debacle reminds me of the sub prime debacle. Two sides of the same coin. Easy credit for people who wish to live beyond their means.

The "claim" is that leasors have stricter credit requirements for leasees vs. buyers, but I wonder if in practice this was the case in the past?

Does anyone know if the default rate on leases has increased at all?

Sometimes it's just not possible to be "nice" while being honest. Good for Suze; while I am sometimes put off at her "over the top" persona, I find myself usually agreeing with her message. This time I must say, she is "Spot on!"

The person she was lecturing did, of course, ignore her advice and kept giving reasons why she HAD to lease a new Range Rover.

She was much nicer to the 11 year old girl who wanted to buy a $109 doll to add to her already 5-doll collection. She was "denied" but with a much sweeter demeanor.

I love her. She makes so much sense. That's why I drive a 91 Accord that I have to push, I canceled my electricity so I could max out my 401k but now I can only surf the internet from the library.

Next I cancel the water so I can save $300 every two months. True the bucket in the bathroom smells but I have much more to save now.

What always happens:

Tony Tightwad: "I'm retiring in three weeks! I have several million dollars in my 401K! My other investments are doing well! I have a $50,000 emergency fund! My house is paid-off! I have no credit card debt! My 1990 Buick is still running fine! My wife and I are going to take that dream vacation with all the change I saved for the last 15 years!

OW! WHAT'S WRONG?

LEFT...SIDE...OF...BO...DY......FEELS...........NUMB! UNGHHHHH!!!!"

Mrs. Tightwad: "Tony was such a good man! GIRLS, WE'RE GOIN' TO VEGAS!"

Freddie Freeloader: "Dang! The company's forcing me into retirement! I All I have is $2,500 in my checking account. The house is in foreclosure. I'm maxed-out on all my cards! My 2006 Kia is being repossessed! My %&! of a wife is divorcing me! I hope I qualify for food stamps and have enough Social Security so I can rent an efficiency at the Ghetto Arms Apartments!"

The Freeloader Family 35 years from now: "Happy Birthday to you! Happy Birthday to you! Happy 100th Birthday, dear Freddie..."

Well she DOES own 5 houses outright with no mortgages, so I doubt she's livin' poor.

But you're right of course, "saving" money at the cost of basic decent living makes no sense, nor does cost-cutting on 91 octane gas on a high performance luxury car.

Did I ever tell you about The Theory of Inferior Ice Cream"?

It goes something like this:

What is the purpose of ice cream?
Pleasure.
It's not good for you, it's not nutritious, none of that.

Sooooo, buying inferior, bad-tasting ice cream to save money becomes, essentially, a meaningless act.

I couldn't agree more.

This is something I've really only come to fully realize within the past 10 years due to dietary health-related restrictions. I can "cheat" once in a while. Because it is more of a rarity for me, I will only cheat if it is truly worth it.

My wife and I have grown to adopt this philosophy in other parts of our existence, too. Life is too short not to enjoy yourself. Why bother with something if, in the end, your reaction is "eh"?

Hey, how do you like your car? Eh.
You happy with that house you financed for 30 years? Eh.
How's the food at that restaurant you've visited 12 times? Eh.
Are you happy with your long distance service? Eh.
