Somehow I am not surprised that the Avalon may be discontinued as I speculated on that possibility when I opened the 2010 Avalon thread.
Nonetheless, the second generation Avalon was a nice car albeit a little staid in its exterior styling.

The second generation, had it been given the power and suspension of the current generation, would have been a car to enjoy forever... we can only dream....

It has always seemed a bit foolish to me for Toyota and Lexus to be building virtual duplicate vehicles except for RWD vs FWD. Now with FWD and F/AWD vehicles becoming history due to the public wising up to their HAZARDS I fully expect we will soon see versions of the RWD and available R/AWD Lexus GS series being used to fill in for the soon to be obsolete Avalon.
Could the obsolesence of the Camry be far behind...??

I could think of about a half a million reasons why the Camry is going nowhere in Toyota's stable. The Avalon very well may be gone since large car/SUV sales are in the toilet. However, what manufacturer would drop their best selling model that also happens to be the #1 selling sedan in the country?????
Also... what is similar between the Avalon and GS? Completely different animals. The GS is a smaller sporty sedan that is RWD the large size Avalon has always been on Toyota's FWD platform that is shared company wide (Camry, ES, RX, HL, Sienna etc). They really share nothing similar that I know of other than the engine.

I'm not concerned with the tech aspects so much as the sales volume. How few Avalons can Toyota make and sell in a model year before the accounting dept says stop because we make no money? The Avalon is a great value. The size, gas mileage, relative price, etc., are unbeatable. Even if you make it alongside a Camry line it's still a separate car.
But, if you are right, a redesigned Lexus GS at maybe $36k, plus tax, w/Nav...a roomy backseat and a generous trunk... lead me to the dealership, I'm ready !!

I would like to see the Crown Majesta take the place of the Avalon:

don't buy all of this - the Avalon selling particularily well to the same older demographic it always has, with size not available on anything other than a LS. And it outperforms many smaller cars at the gas pumps as well as the drag strip. Would Toyota discontinue some of its V8 models, perhaps , although I seriously doubt that folks that are out spending the extra bucks for an GS, SC or LS are worried too much about $5 gas. The 05 Avalon begat the 07 Camry and the ES350 the size differences not all that significant, but there still remains a solid market for something called an Avalon as THE premium Toyota. Not everything considered 'luxurious' needs to have that 'L' on the grille, and nor could a Camry be accepted as a vehicle on the same level as an Avalon (even if it is essentially the truth) Why would Toyota want to fix something that ain't broke?
