If you have $40,000 tied up in solar pannels and your neighbor's trees grow up and block your power production the tree is on the loosing end of the battle. Keep in mind solar arays are financially laid out around a 30yr program even a tree planted after the solar panel instalation can become an issue.

Still, the key factor should be what was there first. And in this instance of the solar panels versus the redwood trees, it looks like a mixed victory. Notice that trees 1-3, which were planted in 1996, and were already shading the area that the solar panels were installed in 2001, were sort of grandfathered in. Trees 4-8 were planted "within the next 5 years", but it doesn't specifiy the dates that they went in. That would imply that they were in by 2001, when the solar panels were installed. It's entirely possible that they were all planted before those solar panels were installed. Even if they weren't blocking the panels, they still could have been there first.

I think that's sort of a gray area, where the trees could have been there first, and while they might not block the solar panels that were installed later, they will eventually, because trees tend to grow.

However, any tree that's planted AFTER a solar panel is installed, should be removed if it ends up blocking it.

One major benefit that a tree can provide is shade, which will help with cooling. However, if these trees are blocking the neighbor's solar panels, I'd presume that they're north of the owner's house, so they're not really providing him any shade. But they still could be providing privacy, to a degree. I guess one compromise could be to remove the redwoods and replace them with some other evergreen that will grow tall enough to give privacy, but not tall enough to block the solar panels.

I would say removing the trees is somewhat counter productive. The trees shade the house reducing the need for AC. They also absorb CO2. I am sure it is one of the many yuppie laws that CA passes without doing any real research.

The latest ballot measure in CA will run all of the egg ranches out of business. I guess then we buy synthetic eggs from China. Or have them trucked up from Mexico. They want every farm animal to have quiet time outside in the fresh air each day.

I am just surprised that CA has not raised our gas tax higher. We are already number one in the nation. The latest has CA at 74.9 cents per gallon of gas and 84.3 cents per gallon of diesel. Way ahead of second place.

It's a rough road ahead, I see the stock market doing well as all the other asset classes are busted and the sideline cash is too much after the election. Later when the rates start to rise..... Goldman is calling for a market bottom in October and 1070 spx . Though I feel we had a market bottom last Wednesday, vix at 42, t-bills negative it does not meet Goldman's schedule so we must revisit. Their oil analyst ( my saying, never forget what the first 4 letters spell) is a peak oil advocate and stated $200 oil first. They were the first to say fnma/fre were insolvent scaring the foreign central banks who held trillions of their short term debt and threatened to dump leading to all US guaranteed debt being a pariah., the real reason fnm/ fre failed, their capitaliztion ratio's were fine as they stated.
Anyway, the price of oil peaked China stockpiling pre- olympics and tanked there after.
No man is an island. So what the hell do they use on their sandwiches there ? Bad mayo/Ireland joke, please excuse. Regardless, we go down they go down, oil gets extreme. All is better later but the world has a corrective mechanism against $200 oil.
It's good to be Warren Buffet.Hell it's good to be Jimmy Buffet. pop top and lost shaker of salt.

Gagrice, this might be a good time to ask the obvious question again: why is it that you still LIVE in California?!

Do you feel that all state governments are equally bad, so why not live near the ocean?

I am for any law that protects and encourages investment in alt power generation, especially solar which has had such a hard time getting off the ground (so to speak! ). And for the record I think you have to agree that the shade from the trees might save the shaded homeowner 10% of his/her daily cooling costs, but the solar array can provide ONE HUNDRED PERCENT of that homeowner's electricity, day in and day out. Much bigger savings preserving the operation of the solar array.

There's news today that Toyota will show a natural gas powered hybrid at the LA show this fall. How do these CNG-powered cars get their gas? Is there a way to get it from your house supply, or is it only from special refueling stations? I would think that being a regular hybrid the thing would have a large range, 500 miles or more, and would be a great way to save half of one's gasoline costs.

I'd rather be Jimmy Buffett. More fun and $50 million a year ain't bad for a guy that had his last big hit 35 years ago.

You know that Warren is his Uncle?

Are Warren and Jimmy Buffett Related?. The DNA says no.

In the news, U.S. gasoline inventories lowest since 1967.

I love the weather where I live. I left CA for Alaska in 1970 because it was getting too crowded for me. I have followed the politics and think overall they stink. Too much control by too few people.

Solar still has a ways to go. It has applications. If it was subsidized at a reasonable percentage for home owners I would consider. I have a large roof area that faces South. Though my neighbor has huge pine trees. Not sure how they would affect solar. The last thing I would consider is suing a neighbor under any circumstances. I think that is a big part of what is wrong with America.

CNG can be produced at home with PHILL. I believe that Honda just sold their interest in FuelMaker the company that MFG PHILL. Your Natural Gas service has to be able to handle the heavier demand. It takes about 6 hours to fill a Civic GX with a home unit like PHILL. The Current GX is selling for about $26k. Kind of expensive for a Civic. Maximum range is about 280 miles. I think that it is still a commuter only vehicle. You can get a lot of used CNG Crown Vics at State auctions. A friend buys them all the time for his parking lot cleaning service.

Maybe maintenance? Seems like a lot of them usually shut down in the fall for repair and to change over to cracking winter gas.
