An article on the state of banks in this country, and the FDIC which is supposed to insure your money. I'm not saying you wouldn't evemntually get your money back, but it may take awhile.
Hopefully we won't find out, but if the FDIC is anything like FEMA ... well we better put casjh under the mattress and fill the garage with gas/w Stabil in it.

You have to check some court cases.

Any of you guys have your 401K or other money safely tucked in a money market? Can't lose your gas money there right?

I think mine is still paying about 3%, although if the Fed cuts rates again it'll drop. I did have to raid it slightly though, to finance my heat pump and electrical upgrades to the house.

Trouble is, some folks tried to store gasoline in their apartment and the place went up in flames. I think the only way you can safely store a large quantity of gasoline is in a large underground tank. However, there are some serious environmental issues if that tank leaks and fuel gets into the ground water. I recall an entire neighborhood that was affected when a large underground fuel tank was leaking on the site of a nearby abandoned gas station.

large underground tank

I think you'd have issues with stale gas too. Gas goes stale in a few weeks if not chemically treated. Sta-bil isn't all that cheap either. Sta-bil lasts about 12-15 months when mixed with fresh gas before storage. Diesel may be an option if you can convert your fleet to diesel cars and trucks. backwoodshome.com

I think just about every tank in CA has been dug up and replaced. No more mom & pop gas stations left. At least not near any urban area. There were a lot of fairly new stations shut down and the tanks dug up. Then you have to dig out the soil until no contamination is found and remediate the soil. Very expensive. That ran the little guys out of business in CA.

That tank would be illegal here and Alaska. I believe now any tank over 100 gallons has to have a moat with plastic liner.

That is a good article explaining different fuels and the storage problems.

wow...haven't heard any dan in quite some time.

is anyone being POSITIVELY affected by the recent falling gas prices, slight as they are? I'm getting a little less cautious...like driving to the Safeway that's 2 miles away rather than the one that's .75 miles away.
