Ike damaged or destroyed 11 offshore production platforms or drilling rigs, but so far there have been no big spills, the U.S. Coast Guard said Monday. There are about 3,800 energy structures in the Gulf of Mexico. Shell Oil, the largest oil producer in the Gulf of Mexico, said it found "moderate damage" on some of its oil and gas production platforms but no major structural damage. |

Basically the consumer is taking a mild screwing when gas prices increase by 25 cents a gallon for gas that is marked up overnight. The pols have bigger fish to fry. We get whacked by $5 or so but there are 250+ million gas powered vehicles; the cumulative effect is like a marathon gangbang. The only way to 'fight back" is collectively, as a nation, to drive a little slower, keep the vehicle in max operating condition etc. Nobody get rich individually by this strategy (although there is evidence on Edmunds.com that the average vehicle wastes in excess of $100 a year by driving on underinflated tires). Collectively we can have a HUGE effect on price. There was an old saying during the Revolutionary War that goes like this, "tax you, tax me, tax the mn behind the tree." Conservation is just great provided someone else is doing it.
