Unfortunately humans as a species are all for the path of least resistance. If the gas price is down it's a lot easier to go on driving and not looking for alternatives. Nobody wants to spend a ton of money looking for better alternatives when gas is cheap. I don't know. Our whole public mentality is backwards.

"...Lower prices would send us back to our wasteful and polluting habits..."

I sure hope so. My next car will be a fuel-sipping 4 cyl. By that time you and your wasteful friends will all be trading your hybrids for SUVs. I'll step in and get a bargain.

BTW, weren't you the one who said oil would never drop below $100 ever again?

oldfarmer50 says, "BTW, weren't you the one who said oil would never drop below $100 ever again? "

Close, but no. I'm the guy who thinks he KNOWS for a FACT that the average USA gasoline price will NEVER dip below $2 again, ever. The days of $1.50 gas are gone forever, thank gosh !!!

10 "petroleum platforms" in the Gulf were entirely destroyed? Does that mean long-term price increases for gas in the U.S.?

Not significant at all.

The Gulf of Mexico is home to a quarter of U.S. oil production and 15 percent of its natural gas output.
Ike damaged or destroyed 11 offshore production platforms or drilling rigs, but so far there have been no big spills, the U.S. Coast Guard said Monday. There are about 3,800 energy structures in the Gulf of Mexico.
Shell Oil, the largest oil producer in the Gulf of Mexico, said it found "moderate damage" on some of its oil and gas production platforms but no major structural damage.

Basically the consumer is taking a mild screwing when gas prices increase by 25 cents a gallon for gas that is marked up overnight. The pols have bigger fish to fry. We get whacked by $5 or so but there are 250+ million gas powered vehicles; the cumulative effect is like a marathon gangbang.
The only way to 'fight back" is collectively, as a nation, to drive a little slower, keep the vehicle in max operating condition etc. Nobody get rich individually by this strategy (although there is evidence on Edmunds.com that the average vehicle wastes in excess of $100 a year by driving on underinflated tires). Collectively we can have a HUGE effect on price.
There was an old saying during the Revolutionary War that goes like this, "tax you, tax me, tax the mn behind the tree."
Conservation is just great provided someone else is doing it.

Illegal activity expenses are often deductible.

I have yet to see that in a tax code.

Do I sense a little "1984?" I think the current gas prices are double-plus ungood.
