Anything they pay is deductible as "meals and entertainment."

Even bribes are deductible as business expenses for tax purposes. The flip side is that if you list bribes on your tax return or SEC filings, other government law enforcement agencies might want to speak with you about it.

On any given weekend in San Diego there are several conventions with the associated parties going on. They are paid for by some corporation. I know the ones I went to tied to the Cellular business always had Federal people in attendance from the FCC and who knows what else. Whatever the cost it is a tax deduction. Now multiply that times all the cities in the USA that cater to conventions. Billions are spent wining and dining people that can do those corporations some good. It sounds like the Minerals people know how to get the best parties going.

If they ever cut off that tax loophole most of the convention centers in the US would go broke.

PS
I bet none of those convention goers worry about $4 gas. It is all a write-off.

What makes you think it is a loophole? Conventions are legitimate business expenses, and so is the $4 gas to get there.

No problem until they become Sex orgies, drinking and drug laced events to seduce legislation from Federal employees. As was the case posted that started this discussion.

My wife got to go to a DOE conference one time in DC. They put everyone up at the Ritz-Carlton/Pentagon City. I tagged along but was irritated that they wanted people to wear coats and ties in the lobby. Sheesh. Most of that stuff could have been handled with some video conferencing. I'd hate to see the price tag for a full blown convention.

Now ... does anyone have any comments about how the price of gas is affecting you? Even if it's dropped a good bit below $4 in lots of places around the country?

Filled the Expedition up today for $3.67. Yeah, I'd like to see them lower, but it doesn't affect me either. Last tank lasted two weeks.

My normally intelligent coworker was telling us that we needed to leave the office and go buy gas now. Because of Hurricane Ike, the price should hit $5 sometime this morning. It is at $3.59 right now.

LOL!

I guess Exxon and Valero shut down operations to ride out the storm, which impacted gas prices along the Texas coast nearby. I am not expecting prices to jump near me unless a significant portion of oil production is put out of commission by Ike.

I noticed a slight bump in prices this morning. The local Shell raised the price of 87 from $3.589 to $3.659. Whatever it jumps up to, I'm sure it'll come back down in a few days. All my cars are still at least half-full, so I shouldn't have to worry about filling up for awhile.

That's approximately eleven cars with 10 gallons each. You should be good for a while, I'd say.
