The implicated government employees, provided the allegations are accurate as they appear to be, were clearly in the wrong here. As you point out, many do have some difficulty believing public servants are capable of such behavior. Likewise many will be inclined to give the oil companies a pass on this as well. A little grease here or there is just part of the cost of doing business, right? The parties, gifts, drugs, and trips show up somewhere as business expenses. Not sure how the sex appears on the balance sheet though. My favorite quote in the article: "Sexual relationships with prohibited sources cannot, by definition, be arms-length,"

I know the ones I went to tied to the Cellular business always had Federal people in attendance from the FCC and who knows what else. Whatever the cost it is a tax deduction. Now multiply that times all the cities in the USA that cater to conventions. Billions are spent wining and dining people that can do those corporations some good. It sounds like the Minerals people know how to get the best parties going. If they ever cut off that tax loophole most of the convention centers in the US would go broke. PS I bet none of those convention goers worry about $4 gas. It is all a write-off.
