Dropping a $1,000 every 3 weeks for heat will be a shock.

I called my oil company a few weeks ago to get an estimate on things, and they said that contracts that were renewing at that time were locking in at $5.62 per gallon. My contract doesn't renew until late October, and by then it could be even higher! Luckily I'm in a fairly mild climate, the DC suburbs. But still, I blew about $1200 last winter for heating oil. That was at $3.55 per gallon, and this past winter seemed milder than normal. I could see it blowing up to $2000-2500 or worse this coming winter!

that a $10 increase in the price of oil equates to approximately $0.25 in the price of gas, and that oil prices of late have been very volatile owing to the crappy state of the economy. Bottom line: I don't think $2 gas is making a comeback. On the bright side, Labor Day is only about 6 weeks away, and gas prices should fall then as they usually do. Expect gas at or below $3 by Christmas (add $0.50 if you are in California). |

So if prices drop I'll pay less, but will never pay more then $5.62 per gallon. They also throw about 15 cents worth of other fees and crap on there though, so that $5.62 would be more like $5.77. Currently, my contract is market price with a $3.55/gallon cap. But both times they came out to fill up my tank this past winter, it was at $3.55. The year before, I think the cap was $3.19 per gallon, but each of the 3 times they filled me up, it came out to under $3.00 per gallon. Still, it's a long way from my first year in the house (11/03-11/04) when I was paying $1.19 per gallon. |

We will look back in 20 years and see $2 gas as nothing more than a footnote in history. It's as gone as the 25 cent hamburger and the 5 cent candy bar. |
