Not to many cars under 3,000lbs and 100hp anymore.

Not too many cars slower than 10 seconds to 60 mph any more either. Indeed, today's Sentra gets to 60 mph in about half the time of the 80s model. Now you know where a good portion of our fuel economy went.

And this in a model that is basically the definition of commuter car. What's all that speed for?

Anyone notice that oil rose above $75/barrel yesterday, and winter gas prices do not seem to be materializing? I am paying within $0.20 of the price I was paying on July 1 for a gallon of gas.

Therefore, the Fit does not meet ANY of the old "econobox" definition.

And what definition might that be? I just tried looking it up in my dictionary (a real dictionary, not some online thing like Wikipedia or urbandictionary.com) and it's not even in there. And this is a very comprehensive dictionary that even covers curse words, racial slurs, etc.

"econobox" is a slang term. And it's going to mean different things to different people. To me, a Fit is in every sense of the word an econobox. Now it's much better than something like an old Chevette, Corolla, VW Bug, or whatever, but it's still a small car, with a focus on economy and low price.

How about a cramped ugly little sardine can that gets poor mileage for its size and should not be allowed to visually offend the other drivers on the road? Honda should have name it the mini Aztek.

You can thank our current Congress and Prez for that. Oil has not gone up. The $Dollar has gone down. Look at Gold at $1069 per oz. You cannot print $Billions of dollars in worthless paper and expect people to give it the same value it had last year or the year before. Better get your wheelbarrow out. You may need it to carry enough money to buy a loaf of bread.

It's kind of a little box and it has no real performance...sounds like a lot of the old "econobox" to me...only in that it barely gets better mileage than some much larger or more powerful vehicles.

How about when the dollar fell during the previous regime? Who was to blame then?

The president and congress are not the ones who really control monetary policy.

Gas prices here started easing a while back just as oil prices started creeping up from $70 a barrel. With the fall-off in driving, the barrel price isn't correlating to the price at the pump very well. Must be plenty of stock at the refineries.

Subcompacts - a Versa will sticker out under $10k MSRP, but you can't look at a Fit until you get almost at $15k. $15k isn't an "econobox" price in my mind, even if the rest of the car fits.

The Fit sales tell me there is a market for small station wagon type vehicles. If Honda built a Civic wagon not many would buy the Fit. Fit sales for Sept 09 are down 51% from Sept 08. The few that want them have them. Very small niche vehicle for those that want to stick out in a crowd without spending the money for a Prius.

That surprises me, but they seemed a bit overpriced when we shopped them late last year. The Fit Sport we liked (ok the one I liked) stickered over $18,000. Not all that much cheaper than a Prius II.

Cheap gas has probably hurt sales too.

Even the Smart by boaz47

or not so Smart is off by more than 31 percent and gas is dropping in my area as well. Suzuki is bleeding to death. Still unless they offer something better than the Fit and Smart at Kia and Hyundai prices I will drive my old Pontiac 4 banger and my Tahoe till the wheels fall off. And I am driving even less this year than last year. If they offered a Diesel SUV or Pickup at a much more reasonable price point I could see going back into the market. Looking at car sales I can see I am not alone with my disenchantment with the auto industry and fuel prices.
