No wonder prices for gasoline are going up, its not SUVs and pick-um-ups, its all those dang mowers.

Don't forget the boats and big rig RVs in use at this time of year also.

Filling up my 5-gallon plastic gas can was very painful last year with $4+ gallon/reg. Today, its close to $15 for a fillup and apparently headed up higher. I am getting "less" fuel economy on current gas 48" rider than on previous 38" rider. But, the 48" JD is heavier machine with more HP, Cruise, Tilt, Power deck lift, Power Steering, Cup Holders, etc. I don't use the Cruise, maybe that would help conserve fuel on long runs that don't have tree obstacles.

Wonder if our govt controlled media is allowed (today) to complain about gas prices as they did prior to 2009. Gas has gone up maybe 70+ percent since last Jan 20 and barely a peep out of the media.

Well I haven't done too bad, so far. I have a 5-gallon gas can I use for the lawn equipment, and I think I've had to fill it up three times, and it's still about half-full. So, about 12-13 gallons so far. We have two tractors, a 1969 and a 1990 Montgomery Ward. The "new" one was out of commission for about a month, so we were relying on the old one. It's a bit of a guzzler compared to the new one. Heavy sucker, too. There's a low spot in my grandmother's yard that sometimes stays wet. The new tractor would just go right over it, or, at the worst, get a little stuck, to where the wheel would lose traction, and I'd just have to get off and push it. The old one sunk right in, though! And despite having some form of posi-traction (both wheels spin, rather than just one) it just dug itself in deeper, and pushing it out was a 2-man job!

Makes me glad that I have my (puny) 5000 sf lot with about 750 sf of grass in the backyard and less than than in the front.

Have had my mower for 9 years now - a gallon and a half of gas will last about a month or so of work, if I mow once a week.

...is that a two-gallon can of gasoline lasts all summer to fuel both my lawnmower and weedwhacker and that's for two properties!

Do you need to put in Stabil somewhere in Jul-Aug to get safely to last cuts in Oct?

Unfortunately, I use maybe 2-2.5 for each complete mowing session. But, then again, I don't have a boat, rv, motorcycle, etc. that uses up the precious resource.

With rains we have been having in N IL, grass needs cutting twice/week. If gas soon goes back up to $4.30 like last year, then weekly 2 cuts will cost perhaps $20+ per week. Make up for that expense by not going to Cubs games.

We've had enough rain in these parts, that there's standing water in parts of my yard around the house, the field out back, and my grandmother's. Grass desperately needs to be cut...been about 3 weeks since I hit up my yard and 5 since I've done my grandmother's But it's just been too wet to do anything about it.

Normally I like to cut it every two weeks, whether it needs it or not.

No need for Stabil. The fuel stays fresh.Dumb question, but would premium fuel help or hurt a lawnmower or doesn't it matter?

Man, I must really be an "evil doer". I have a boat, travel trailer,SUV, portable generator, gas weedwacker, gas leaf blower, and a lawn tractor.

We take the boat out is often as possible, and I'm still burning $4.30/gal gas from last fall. Haven't put gas in the boat yet this year, we were out Sunday and I think we are down to about 1/2 a tank.

I met a guy this weekend at the lake that was a heavy equipment operator in Chicago. He drives an f250 to work and back. His commute is 103 miles each way!!

I don't think premium would hurt the lawn equipment, but it wouldn't do anything for it, either. However, as the equipment ages, just like a car, they might benefit from the higher octane. I usually just put 87 in my equipment, though.

I know a small engine mechanic who says use premium in all 1 cyl engines. It only costs a few pennies and makes them easier to start.
