While no one's seriously talking about seceding, there is the very real bad economic impact of proposed anti-CO2 laws on Texas. We'll be penalized for producing the oil and gas and gasoline that the rest of the country uses. Not good.

I agree, the country is under siege by the Enviro whacko elements, led by cult leaders like Al Gore. They have one goal. To destroy the economics of this country. Put all but the wealthy elites into high rise caves and feed us Food made in China. Same kind of cap n trade BS will impact the coal producing states. Even though half the electricity used in this country comes from very reliable coal generators.

The cost will have to be passed onto the consumer. And people hear and believe these guys and they end up in charge of US in Congress.

Local stations tried to push the pump price up toward $2 a gallon a week or so ago. They got up to $1.95 then fell back to $1.89, then $1.82, $1.79. Maybe the prediction I saw for $2.30 average max this summer will hold. I guess if the economy keeps bumping the bottom demand and prices will not be able to climb much. BTW, pricing is for Memphis, Tn.

In Colorado, the price at the local station is now at 1.999/gal for RUG (which, in CO, is 85 octane, not 87). Was a 1.959 for several weeks before this latest increase earlier in the week.

I don't expect to see $3/gal, much less $4/gal, in 2009. Maybe $2.50/gal, on average, but guess we'll have to see where the economy is headed.

in NorCal is $2.30 for RUG, and I do expect to see something close to $3/gallon this summer. But that should be manageable, speaking from a purely personal POV. As soon as we see the real estate market swing back up, consumer confidence will return quickly I think. At which point we are also ripe for $4 gas again....

....will that be this year? It might be. If not we can look forward to a year at $2.00-2.75 (CA prices). I just hope it doesn't lull too many people into a false sense of security that gas prices will never spike again.

I paid $2.15 for RUG here outside of Chicago. I expect around $2.50 or so this summer.

Is that going to slow you down if it hits $2.50?

I'm planning a short road trip in late July over to the coast and my concern is availability, not the price per gallon (within limits anyway....).

$2.50 won't slow me down. We are planning a trip to Colorado this summer and a 40-50 cent a gallon increase would only add about $50 to the cost of the vacation.

As for availability unless the government puts price controls on gas availability will never be a problem, price could be though.

"The price of oil burst through the $71 a barrel mark today amid revelations that proven reserves had fallen for the first time in 10 years and predictions that the price could eventually hit $250.

The febrile atmosphere in oil markets was fed by the publication of BP's Statistical Review of World Energy, which showed that the world's proven crude reserves had fallen by 3bn barrels to 1.258tn by 2008 from a revised 1.261tn in 2007."
