That first stretch, I calculated 21.5 mpg, but it's possible that the fuel pump just shut off early. However today, I drove that car into work and filled up. The second tank, which included us running back and forth to Carlisle and other assorted local driving, netted 15.8 mpg. Total for that trip, I estimate, was about 17.2 mpg (386.3 miles total and about 22.5 gallons used). I also think the odometer might be a bit low. According to Google maps, it's 120 miles between the Shell where I started off from and the Getty I filled up at just before going into Carlisle, but the odometer on the car only registered 114.7. So that's about a 4.6% discrepancy, which, if true, would really put me to 18 mpg. Not too horrible, I guess, for a 1979 disco lovebarge with a Lean Burn 360-2bbl. If anything, I'm going to be using more gas for car shows this time around, since I' putting my '76 LeMans in that car show in Macungie PA coming up in 3 weeks. Normally I'd just drive the Intrepid and we'd walk in as spectators. The Intrepid could get 30+ on that trip if I don't push it, whereas the LeMans might get 17.5 if I baby it. I'm just thankful I don't rely on these old beasts for daily transportation, doing 20-30K miles per year!

| Cost me 50 bucks today to fill up from an 1/8th of a tank. Other than being shocked at the cost, and a bit lighter in the wallet, not that much of an impact to lifestyle. Still proably doing about the same amount of driving... maybe a little bit less. I average about 7k miles a year and my wife about 10k miles. | |

I was bad yesterday - drove down and ran a single errand a couple of miles away. On the good side, I did double check the van's air filter to remind myself that it is relatively new (forgot to write it down in my car book when I last replaced it I guess).

My new car has a big 3.8L V-6 with over 260 hp. I use it mainly to go to work, a 22mile round trip. In mixed driving I average 24-25mpg. That's pretty good I think. Every now and then I weaken and have some fun, gunning it off the line, chirping the tires on the upshift and taking corners a wee bit too fast. Then I get about 20mpg. The funny thing, I also have an older car with a 2.5L V-6 which under the same conditions gets about 2-3mpg LESS than the bigger motor. Not nearly as much fun to drive either. So what should I do, drive the fast car fast and get 20 or drive the slow car moderately and get the same milage? I'm trying to be good. |

Replying to: jipster (Jul 15, 2008 3:01 pm) i really like the prunes and steve's gas angle makes me think of filling up a test tube with some fake 'gas' and labelling it a gallon of 1958 gas or something like that. my sister spent a lot of time in labs and 30 cents worth of gas was about all she could afford. maybe i could add something about how far her prius could on it. |

Replying to: oldfarmer50 (Jul 15, 2008 3:11 pm) It's actually pretty amazing that they have managed to keep getting more power and better mileage while growing the cars. I mean my old 80 Accord probably got about the mileage that my 00 did and it was a much smaller car. The new 08s get as good or better mileage and make my 00 look small. If we just settled for not raising horsepower at this point they'd probably solve the whole gas mileage problem pretty quickly. |
