Treasury is more than the IRS and Bob Dole gives him a bye, so maybe he'll get confirmed. Whitehouse.gov talks about clean coal, hybrids and increasing CAFE on the energy page, but nothing about gas taxes there or on the taxes page.

Or at least we should by now. It's all about perception but contango does suggest quite strongly that oil will rise in the future. Before you don your wayfarer's or partake of the first morsel of free range tofu ( yah I do amuse mineself) It is the extremes , lol. |

I would hate to hear you were getting IOUs rather than a paycheck. I am already guessing I won't get a state tax return. But them I plan my deductions pretty close so there isn't much of an exchange between me and the state or even the Feds in April. |

My wife's GMC SUV gets 20 MPG, so when gas was $4.00 she spent $160 a month on gas now it's only $80 we visit the Steakhouse twice a month again. If gas hits $4 this summer then it's back to Hamburgers on the grill. Big Deal. Gas at $2,000 a year is not the issue but losing my job and my wifes at $140K a year is. I'll take high gas prices and a job versus low gas prices and no jobs.

There are others that might have equivalent or better skills that "ALSO" obey the law and pay their full taxes. Noticed that Chief Justice Roberts did state full name of Barak Hussein Obama while Sen Feinstein said Barak H Obama and annoucer merely said Barak Obama. While Roberts will have nothing to do with $4 gas, Obama might. Will he change his stance on off-shore drilling and Alaska?

Replying to: gagrice (Jan 20, 2009 3:51 pm) Complete Bullcorn. The Prius and all the other hybrids combined were less than 2% of the cars on the road. No one makes a change like that because all of a sudden A WHOPPING HUGE ALMOST TWO WHOLE PERCENT of the cars on the road are getting 45 MPH. Prius drivers were costing the state at most a couple hundred thousand dollars a year in lost gas tax. You don't implement a system which will cost millions of dollars because all of a sudden you are losing a couple hundred thousand large a year. That system was concocted with the FEAR that high-mileage cars would become the norm. Not merely because of the Prius. They were planning for the end of the stupid SUV era. |

Replying to: xrunner2 (Jan 21, 2009 6:20 am) The only way for the people of this country to reduce the amount of corruption and influence of the wealthy and politically-connected, is for the people to stop giving the power to the government to direct them. We need to stop looking to the government to provide us jobs, give us health care, bail us out of bad financial decisions and basically tuck us in at night. I do not want the government to be intervening in the cost of gasoline, other than collecting what is needed to repair the roads and bridges. I do not want the government collecting gas tax money to fund buses and subways, parks, health-care, reduce pollution, or provide bail-out funds. I want a basic government that provides basic services, not the various levels with have now - city, county, state, and federal with their millions of pages of laws, statutes and regulations (many outdated). Here's an interesting exercise - sit down and try and list all the taxes, registration fees, and other payments to the government. You'll find it hard just to figure out what your paying, never mind where it's going!

Replying to: kernick (Jan 21, 2009 7:16 am) Back to the topic, gas is creeping up here in spite of cheap barrels of oil on the world market and I'll predict $2 a gallon gas here by March 1. From there it's only another eight weeks to $3 a gallon gas. And then it'll be hurricane season. |

Replying to: steve_ (Jan 21, 2009 10:05 am) One story I read was discussing price of oil and all the folks storing it for when prices go back up. Especially Iran having a bunch of tankers loaded waiting out the low prices. At some point storage if full (are we putting any back in the Strategic Reserve while it is cheap?) so they would just about have to quit pumping...and quit collecting if they are not selling. Does anyone around here care if Iran goes broke by not selling?
