Yeah, and it's not like the IRS didn't tell him in '06 that he owed self-employment taxes.

Then again, we have a Chief Justice who can't administer a simple oath properly.

Treasury is more than the IRS and Bob Dole gives him a bye, so maybe he'll get confirmed.

Whitehouse.gov talks about clean coal, hybrids and increasing CAFE on the energy page, but nothing about gas taxes there or on the taxes page.

nippononly :
"There seems to be no method to them, no predictability to them, and from where I'm sitting anyone who would GUARANTEE we wouldn't have $4 gas again this summer in my neck of the woods would certainly just be talking out of their ear... "

Well I'll guarantee( sucker's bet but you started it) you won't have $4 gas by this summer.
( Definition shall = September 30th when you stop wearing white ; ) and unlike some who will go un-named, shallow be thy name, I will actually buy the filet for you at Ruth Chris. So it is written, so it shall be done. I'll be waiting to hear the the inverse. Et tu Californian. ' Ere I wax eloquent '. Commodity prices doth suck in a recession. And we all know that oil prices doth love their extremes. Or at least we should by now. It's all about perception but contango does suggest quite strongly that oil will rise in the future. Before you don your wayfarer's or partake of the first morsel of free range tofu ( yah I do amuse mineself) It is the extremes , lol.

well I doubt many of us will predict fuel prices again. But what were some saying last summer about not seeing $2.00 again? I could drag up some posts from the compact car forum where that very prediction was made. I don't believe it will jump back that high but I have planned my vacations based on higher fuel costs so if they don't hit $4.00 I will be able to travel more.

Of course living in California I wonder if we will have a budget by next summer. I hope you don't have a state job. I would hate to hear you were getting IOUs rather than a paycheck. I am already guessing I won't get a state tax return. But them I plan my deductions pretty close so there isn't much of an exchange between me and the state or even the Feds in April.

no more Outback Steak House by plasticsman1

My wife's GMC SUV gets 20 MPG, so when gas was $4.00 she spent $160
a month on gas now it's only $80 we visit the Steakhouse twice a month again.
If gas hits $4 this summer then it's back to Hamburgers on the grill.
Big Deal. Gas at $2,000 a year is not the issue but losing my job and my wifes
at $140K a year is. I'll take high gas prices and a job versus low gas prices and
no jobs.

IRS does not have to tell you, me or Geitner about taxes due. It is up to each of us to examine and follow the tax code or if we are incapable to get professional CPA or other guidance. There is absolutely no excuse for a supposedly brilliant big shot guy like Geitner to not have an impeeccably correct tax return every year. Confirming this guy sends the wrong message about the elite getting away with stuff. This guy is already a black mark on Obama selection, vetting process.

All of our hopes to solve financial mess should not hinge on only one guy that can do this. There are others that might have equivalent or better skills that "ALSO" obey the law and pay their full taxes.

Noticed that Chief Justice Roberts did state full name of Barak Hussein Obama while Sen Feinstein said Barak H Obama and annoucer merely said Barak Obama.

While Roberts will have nothing to do with $4 gas, Obama might. Will he change his stance on off-shore drilling and Alaska?

Gary says, "The whole tax by mile was started because of the Prius"

Complete Bullcorn.

The Prius and all the other hybrids combined were less than 2% of the cars on the road. No one makes a change like that because all of a sudden A WHOPPING HUGE ALMOST TWO WHOLE PERCENT of the cars on the road are getting 45 MPH.

Prius drivers were costing the state at most a couple hundred thousand dollars a year in lost gas tax. You don't implement a system which will cost millions of dollars because all of a sudden you are losing a couple hundred thousand large a year.

That system was concocted with the FEAR that high-mileage cars would become the norm. Not merely because of the Prius. They were planning for the end of the stupid SUV era.

I've got to agree with you about Geitner. Instead of being lenient, they need to make an example of him. I would say that his willingly not paying taxes, harmed the effort on the war on terror, thus aiding and abetting terrorists. Thus he should be picked up as authorized by the Patriot Act, and held without legal counsel in some unnamed detention cell, until the feds get around to interviewing him in a few years.

The only way for the people of this country to reduce the amount of corruption and influence of the wealthy and politically-connected, is for the people to stop giving the power to the government to direct them. We need to stop looking to the government to provide us jobs, give us health care, bail us out of bad financial decisions and basically tuck us in at night. I do not want the government to be intervening in the cost of gasoline, other than collecting what is needed to repair the roads and bridges.

I do not want the government collecting gas tax money to fund buses and subways, parks, health-care, reduce pollution, or provide bail-out funds. I want a basic government that provides basic services, not the various levels with have now - city, county, state, and federal with their millions of pages of laws, statutes and regulations (many outdated).

Here's an interesting exercise - sit down and try and list all the taxes, registration fees, and other payments to the government. You'll find it hard just to figure out what your paying, never mind where it's going!

The thing I like about what little I know about Geitner is that he's tried to do his own taxes for years. I always to do mine too, with a little help from TaxAct and I resent that if I really want to save money I have to go hire a tax preparer to help me with them. No one else in the running has likely done anything but drop shoe boxes of receipts off at their CPA for twenty years and thus has no clue how convoluted the whole process is.

Back to the topic, gas is creeping up here in spite of cheap barrels of oil on the world market and I'll predict $2 a gallon gas here by March 1. From there it's only another eight weeks to $3 a gallon gas. And then it'll be hurricane season.

I posted about Kroger dropping to $1.599 Monday...Tuesday afternoon they had popped back up to $1.739, still there Wednesday morning...about the same with other stations in the Bartlett, TN area. But about 5 miles down the road noticed that Schnucks gas had dropped down to $1.599 Wednesday morning. I guess they are the only station in the area to try and keep pace with Kroger, then Kroger double crossed them.

One story I read was discussing price of oil and all the folks storing it for when prices go back up. Especially Iran having a bunch of tankers loaded waiting out the low prices. At some point storage if full (are we putting any back in the Strategic Reserve while it is cheap?) so they would just about have to quit pumping...and quit collecting if they are not selling. Does anyone around here care if Iran goes broke by not selling?

Considering Geitner's back taxes...wonder what he paid? Just the tax or tax and penalty? From the IRDS.GOV site

Paying Late Penalty

The penalty for paying late is 0.5 percent per month, up to 25 percent of the unpaid amount due.

Waiver of Penalties

The IRS recognizes many people drop out of the system because of personal problems, including serious illness, a death in the family, or loss of financial records in a natural disaster. Depending on the situation, informing the IRS why returns have not been filed could result in a waiver of penalties. See Getting Free Help.
