Just Hawaiian shirts no Ferrari......

They are comfortable and colorful. I would slit my wrist if I had to wear a suit and tie every day....

A friend in La Jolla owns a used men's clothing store. He took in 400 Hawaiian shirts from a Doctor that had passed away. Many still had the tags on them. Of course I got the pick of the bunch. If you are in La Jolla check out "Le Chauvinist". He has some great high end suits and cloths. Salvador is a great guy and good friend..

$2 gas is too much right now by dave8697

I still have the $1.40 stuff in my tanks.
since I bought it last year, we have seen 1.79 then 1.99 now 1.86.
Wholesale gas is 1.11 which is about 1.71 a gallon

For me gas is now about $175 a month, but even that is more than insurance is for 5 vehicles.
Interest is nothing. Only my '01 truck can depreciate and not by much anymore.
7% sales tax along with $400 excise tax seems like takes years of gas savings to recoup.
Dumping my '96 that runs excellent for about $800 to make room in my driveway for a crampier, gutless 4 cyl that will depreciate $1500 every 6 months, for years,
has to be weighed against the tiny piece of the 100 gallons that could be saved. I'd still have my 4 biggest engines left.

in several months, gas is up - the average price is up $0.12 from a month ago, still only $1.78 though. Here in the Bay Area our average price is $2 right on the button. Very manageable.

I think if gas gets back to $3 this coming summer, it will put the squeeze on many folks much more than $4.50 gas did last summer, and those dealers who are hanging onto a bunch of Priuses may live to cheer their decisions to load up on them now while things are slow. But I could well be wrong. That's the great thing about Edmunds, you can speculate and have 25 people remind you how wrong you were later on!

Except perhaps for the May-July period last year, I would think most Prius purchases were calculated and intentional, and those buyers are not regretting their choices now even though the price of gas is at 5-year lows. Remember, only 1 of the 3 reasons people buy those cars is to save money - they also do it to (1) make an environmental statement, or (2) reduce imports of foreign oil because they feel it is a national security issue.

I agree with your assessment on Prius buyers. That does not make them smart. I would say the smart ones are shopping for a Prius NOW. They are a good buy below $20k loaded. Above that they are not so good. It looks like Mossy Toyota here in SD has sold 4 Prius since I posted last week. They are down to 102 in their inventory. At that rate they should be cleared out by June or July.

Is FedEx expecting fuel prices to go up? They have been charging a fuel surcharge for the past 2 years and continue to charge it even when gas was $1.50 per gallon.

Could it be aviation fuel is still high? More than likely customers become accustomed to the surcharge in the delivery price.

Most of their fuel is diesel or Jet A which is higher than gas. We have a gas glut that is keeping that price low.

The thing is the dealers with excess Prius on their lots now are sitting on 2008s. No one will pay sticker for a year old car when the 2009s are already out. And if those 08 don't move before september 2009 they will have to be sold below cost. There will be a loss no matter how gas does in the summer. There is a glut of 2008s of many cars and that will effect either 2009 sales or the profit that the dealers make on left over 2008s. My guess is that 2009 will be worse for new car sales than 2008 even if gas does go up. But the economy had a much larger effect on car sales than fuel prices did. The WSJ did say in an editorial that they felt it was going to be very hard to get people to pay list price for a car or a lamp in 2009.

"...it was going to be hard to get people to pay list price for a car or a lamp in 2009..."

If the economy keeps going the way it is going people won't be buying bread let alone cars.

My BIL works for a manufacturing plant which was sold by GE to a private equity firm (same deal as Chrysler being bought by Cerbrus). They just told him that they are cutting his wages by 40% and making him do the work formerly done by 3 people. His union is fighting it but he doesn't have much hope for a happy ending.

There is one person who won't be buying anything soon.

I can't see gas going back up to $4 with the economy in the dumper. People were drained of all their reserves this summer. They simply don't have the money.
