I rather like replying to those worth replying to rather than to any well wishers of the Joads. But they'd kick his northern butt in OK so on with the post. Smiling and most good naturedly , good will to all.
To keep us topical, intersection near me has a Chevron and across the street an Exxon that closed and has been rebranded into a Citgo. Depite being 10 cents cheaper no Houstonians have yet crossed the line. Everytime I pass it it is empty. Price will prevail but for the near term , good on you Texans. Suck it Hugo. Happy 2009 all.

oil is extracted from the ground and vehicles get moved down the road by burning the gas derived from the oil. all those who touch the process pay income tax, social security tax, gas tax, excise tax, sales tax, and some taxes I don't even know exist. When it's all over, The profits are spent and turned into sales tax, income tax, gas tax, excise tax, etc. From the gov't perspective, oil is, essentially, golden.

It is in the gov't's favor for gas prices to be high except for the fact that recently consumption is down. So with one new factor not in their favor, the gov't needs to fix it so there are no factors not in their favor? Of course. Let no citizen go unscrewed.

Is Iran behind this? by oldfarmer50

So Hamas lobs some rockets and oil goes up (gas REALLY goes up). Who's interests are served by the turmoil?

I've read that at the lows oil has hit Iran can not maintain it's government programs which prevent internal trouble. Iran funds Hamas and other groups like it.

Could all this trouble be a gambit by Iran to boost oil prices?

If it is, it seems to be working. Oil: Up $13. Gas: Up 40 cents (wholesale).

Could this be the test Joe Biden warned about?

If we're going by miles and road usage, then semi trucks are paying way less than their fair share based on road use and damage.

In case anyone needed one, it is a little reminder of how volatile oil and gas prices are and will continue to be, in case someone thought $2 gas was "back to stay".

Not me NO, I know it doth love it's extremes. But now that the paradigm is broken it reacts only to extreme political turmoil and very cold weather. And even then only temporarily. Did I mention it's going to be an exceptionally cold winter ( yet again) ? Whether we put in the low last week or there's another retest coming in the first quarter remains to be seen but , the economic news should damper any attempts by Opec until later in the year when demand starts to pick up. Meanwhile credit card delinquencies and trouble in commercial real estate should keep deflationary pressure up.

Your post is very accurate. The ATA & it's lobby is very active in seeing their truckers do more damage than they pay for.

"...truckers do more damage than they pay for..."

So true. I would guess that the bulk of road wear and tear is caused by heavy trucks. It would seem logical then to make them pay higher road and gas taxes right? Maybe not.

Businesses don't PAY taxes they simply PASS THEM ALONG. If you tax truckers more for road use they either charge you, the consumer, more for shipping or they go broke. This raises the price for everything delivered by truck. So you end up paying the tax.

We little guys always pay.

I don't think many of us will say they are here to stay. Unlike some who said, "I doubt we will ever see $2.00 gas again" when it was close to $4.00.

Watch Out for Falling Speculators by oldfarmer50

They may be jumping out the windows. Oil dropped almost 6 bucks today despite the efforts of the international terrorist and speculators to bring back "the good old days".

Wholesale gas dropped 11 cents.

Don't you feel sorry for these guys?
