As soon as the economy recovers, which will happen much sooner than you get rid of your next new car or truck, summer gas will be $4.50/gallon again.

Are you saying the economy will recover and gas will be at $4.50 by summer? Now I have to hope you are wrong. If gas gets to $4.50 diesel will be over $5.00 and trucking will just about roll to a standstill. People will have to think about picking up something that will tow because you will need a trailer to haul the money it will take to get out of the grocery store.

Well if the economy starts to recover and gas shoots up to $4.50 again it will stiffel any recovery. But I am pretty sure the economy will not recover by then, if it does it will be sluggish.

No while it would make price adjustments inevitable we won't see any hyper inflation.

At anything over $2.60 a gallon, I only drive if it's necessary and generally don't feel like buying big ticket items. At $3 a gallon, lots of other people stay home. Sunday drives are reduced. Fewer kids get jobs at fast food restaurants. Sales of Trucks at the Big 3 fall off sharply. At $3.40 a gallon, there must be a hurricane entering the Gulf of Mexico and at $3.80 a gallon, we are told that India and China must be feeling the pinch too. Then comes collapse. The silver lining would be if the Oil countries invested most of their huge profits in American or international companies stocks and American or International Real Estate. Then the collapse they caused would come around and bite them in the arse. If that did or does happen, then maybe $4 gas will not be back again.

I hope the news doesn't concentrate on fuel waste now that gas is still only barely affordable. I fully expect the media created recession to be ignored as much as possible by the media, and for things to return to being percieved as they really are. Global warming might return to the forefront. We have to be doing well to afford green technology, so soon we will be told we are doing well.

By NEXT summer? No. I think we can be confident that the economy will have recovered by summer 2011 or 2012, and THEN summer gas will be $4.50 or more. And if you were to buy a new vehicle this year or next, that summer 2011-2012 time period will arrive WAY before you sell that vehicle you bought.

In fact, you will be stuck with that vehicle and high gas prices for several more years...

Well with the economy the way it is right now I think getting a new car would require the words, "sucker" on your forehead unless you pay cash. I wouldn't consider any car offered today to be a hedge against higher fuel prices. The cars we have today are just examples of technology developed when fuel was $1.50 a gallon, maybe $2.00. We obviously were lied to AGAIN about how much fuel should cost and the effects conservation has on oil prices. The US had cut consumption by several percent before 2008 and prices were still going up. But let the Stock market make a mistake and oil dropped like a rock. All the experts that were telling us to look for $8.00 buck gas by the end of 2009 or beginning of 2010 have proven to be false prophets and should be deported to live in Europe.

To me $4.00 gas simply proved the consumer is being bamboozled by the manufacturers and the government. We don't need to see the world the way Europe or Asia does. We need to have our lifestyle supported with solutions that work in the US not Japan or France. If we must, fuel can be subsudised to keep the prices down, after all we can afford a trillion to bail out wall street. We as consumers can decide what kind of vehicle we want to buy and we don't need a tree hugger, the government, or anyone else telling us what we "should" drive.

California and CARB let us down when they dropped the requirement for EVs. CAFE let us down when they played with fuel standards and then left a hole big enough to drive a Hummer through. They shouldn't be given another chance and should be abolished. Let the manufacturers make the vehicles and let the consumer decide what they can afford to buy and drive. If the government wants to help then let them provide public transportation to ease vehicle use.

How did $4.00 gas effect me? It angered me because I suspected it was a scam. The manufacturers angered me because they offered cars like the Smart that should have been able to get 70 MPG and it gets 40. They made a whole line of economy cars called Scion and they don't even do as well as a Smart. They sent us a whole selection of new sub compacts that didn't get better fuel mileage than the Corolla or Civic we already had. New and improved has the be "improved" not just new. $2.00 gas will at least take the edge off of my disappointment.

Won't be long now.

No steak dinner 'eh? Well we'll all have to pile in our SUVs and head over to Texas on turkey day. I hear there's a bird or two at someone's relatives house.

Sorry, carnivores. Just did a search of the "Automotive News and Views" database and no entries exist of me offering anyone a steak dinner.

Could someone please check the archives? I vaguely recall something about a steak dinner from lars. Maybe, he bribed one of those hosts to have that post pulled. With the "tens" and "twentys" of people who read these forums... sure would save him a bundle. Besides, I've already gotten a reservation at Ruth's Chris SteakHouse. I'd hate to cancel and end up somewhere like Sizzler's or Ryan's.
