But there is always a cause and effect and even if I drove less, which I do, the increased cost of transporting goods has effected me even more than the cost of fuel for my car.

Yes, I have noticed a lot of that too. A report on the news last night said food price increases have outstripped inflation for the second or third (I forget which) year in a row this year and are expected to increase even more steeply in 2009. I notice that just as much as I notice gas prices. The reasons they gave included increasingly expensive animal feed and transport costs, both of which are highly dependent on the cost of diesel.

my 16 year old daughter is very excited that law passed. she said 'you can have chicken or cow. i just want it to be a happy chicken or cow.'
i told her it means that industry will just leave california and move elsewhere.
she countered,as she is well known to do, that she hopes it is start and will move outward from there.
anyways gas under $2.20 at more and more stations.

Ahh the wisdom of youth, never any consequences. Isn't it wonderful dad? But over the next six years a wonderful transformation occurs where your intelligence and wisdom will increase by a factor of fifty. My congratulations on your learning so much over the next six years. That first job, apt, checkbook. The trade-offs, If I spend it on pizza and concerts then I can't pay my rent. A wonderful period. Now the next two years hang in there.

Paid $1.98 for rug today. We brew it here so it tends to be cheaper. On the oth we are neck and neck with LA for Smog. When the lights go down the refineries turn the valve to the right. Fifty dollar oil possible very soon. Opec Schmopec, recessions really destroy paradigms. The oil market doth love it's extremes.

"...Farm animals would thus not be confined..."

And, as everyone knows, well-traveled happy animals taste better when you eat them.

MTA To Toll All East River Bridges

NEW YORK (CBS) ― Believe it or not, there is even grimmer budget news.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is swimming in a sea of red ink and sources tell CBS 2 HD drivers in the city might not like the bailout plan.

Nearly half a million cars go back and forth over the Brooklyn, Manhattan, Williamsburg and 59th Street bridges every day for free. Some people think that's not right.

"We already have tolls at the Battery Tunnel, Midtown Tunnel, the Triborough Bridge let's put pricing on all of the crossings in between," said Sam Schwartz, one of the leading transportation engineers in the country.

Guess what? State and city officials now seem to agree. Sources tell CBS 2 HD that putting tolls on some or all of the East River bridges is part of the bailout plan being considered for the MTA.

"People coming into the city should be paying for some of the service they get," Schwartz said.

Better unload those Manhattan penthouses while they still have some value. Only the rich will be able to live in NYC. Then I ask myself why would anyone with money live in ANY big City? $10 gas would not get me into a city.

The hardships of city living and the crowded conditions are the very reason we have urban sprawl and suburbia today. And in our area it is why companies and shopping moved out of the city as well.

I'm certainly not one of them, but I know some people who are just suited to a city life. They like being able to walk everywhere, have convenient public transportation, not have to depend on their car, etc. And a lot of people like not having a big yard, or any hard at all to take care of.

I have some friends that live in DC, and for the most part their homes are pretty big. They're narrow, but deep, and have plenty of room inside. And even though you're neighbors are smacked right up next to you, it's really no different than a townhome community out in the suburbs, or even many single family home neighborhoods where they put the houses like 10 feet apart. And the back yards tend to have 6-8' tall privacy fences, so you do have your seclusion, even in the city. Sure, you don't want to go sunbathing in the nude because any of your neighbors could see you from their second floors. But the same is going to hold true for most homes out in the suburbs.

Those old DC rowhouses were built solid, too. They really keep the noise out, so again it's not like the suburbs where you can hear your neighbors fighting and such. Now sure, there are places in the cities where I'm sure you can, like high-rise apartments and such.

City living isn't for everybody, but it does have its advantages.

There is no doubt it has advantages, if you are wealthy. I am mostly familiar with San Diego real estate. A decent condo downtown starts at $500K. One I liked in a good neighborhood with relatively low crime was $1,200,000. That was 2 bedrooms and 1700 sq feet. My home on one+ acre outside the city and away from the constant sirens is half that price and 3000 sq feet on one level. No stairs to climb. Something you should think about when you get retirement age. Taxes and interest on the additional $600,000 would be about $3600 per month. How much gas at $4 per gallon can a person use in a month? I could drive my gas guzzling Sequoia 13,500 miles a month for the additional cost.

At the current $2.50 per gallon I am saving $3400 per month living way outside the city. No obnoxious boom boom music to contend with. No high priced restaurants. And clean clear air to breath. Plus I know all my neighbors after one year and we watch for any questionable people on our cul-de-sac.

If I was a multi millionaire I would probably want a condo by the ocean as a getaway and tax shelter. For the future a bit of land to grow your food would be advisable. I just shelled a bag of walnuts off of our tree for oatmeal nut cookies. mmmm country life is hard to beat.

Until you're an empty-nester and it's now convenient to ditch the McMansion (that use to be productive farmland) and that better school district to become urbane mature hipsters.... Once again.

Funny how we change our opinion about fuel consumption and the environment once "Zachary" or "Emma" (Are those the new must have names?) are out of the picture and we don't have to worry about the school district, yuppie-larvae protecting SUV's or "Stranger Danger" anymore.

If you want to operate a vehicle in NYC, especially Manhattan and not have any increased cost for it is ridiculous. If you dump the McMansion be prepared to dump the SUV too or pay for it.... It's not needed anymore.

some people who are just suited to a city life

One of my wife's relatives has always lived the city life and never has owned a car. Doesn't even drive period. Lived in San Diego (and got all over the huge county), Oakland, Seattle, etc. Hard to imagine how much wasn't spent over a few decades just on gas, not to mention insurance, repairs, parking and interest.

My sister had one of those DC townhouses in Alexandria for a while before she moved way out in the sticks on her acre. She liked it a lot, but likes her rural place too. She does a lot of driving - has to go 1/2 mile just to take out her trash. She's thinking of going back to a condo now, though I can't really see her without a car. She's retired so the high gas prices really cramped her driving.

I miss living downtown but my wife likes being out on the edge where we are now better. We'd both love to live in Manhattan for a year, but we aren't ready to liquidate our retirement saving to do so.
