They are not going to invest in something that's going to lose money.

Who might THEY be? This bill was to authorize purchasing bonds for $9.95 Billion. The best hope is no one with half a brain will loan them the money.

If you had read the proposal as I have you would see just how lame the calculations are in favor of this boondoggle. They calculated how much gas would be wasted with people sitting for hours in gridlock. Adding that to the revenue of the system. How do we know they were not waiting in gridlock to get into the parking lot of this proposed HST? All that aside. The state cannot afford to add another $45 billion to their debt load. They are HOPING the Feds and big investors will get caught up in the boondoggle. Several Peer Reviews including the one from UC Berkeley are less than encouraging.

Then add the lawsuits by environmentalists wanting to protect lands proposed for the train to travel. This is not AZ where you go out in the desert and put up a Coal fired generator or a Nuclear Power Plant. This is CA where the wind, geothermal and solar systems proposed on public lands have been blocked by environmental groups.

They are not the village idiots. They are not going to get into this thing with the intent to lose money.

I think they are. And they will not lose money. They will get the bond and spend it on studies. They will spread the wealth to the agencies involved and NOTHING will be done when the money has run out.

You are blind to reality my friend. When you sit and watch billions wasted on projects that never get off the ground you become a skeptic. This HST project has been draining our coffers since at least 1995. Look at THE State website and the extensive studies and reviews. You think that was all volunteer labor?

Almost half the voters know the facts and voted against the proposition. It was voted down before. This time the added just enough lies to convince those that are too lazy to dig deep.

"The current high-speed rail plan is a fairy tale," said Adrian Moore, vice president of research at Reason Foundation and the study's project director. "The proposal suggests these high-speed trains will be the fastest ever; the most-ridden ever; the cheapest ever; and will convince millions of Californians they no longer need to drive or fly.

"Offering up a best-case scenario is one thing, but actually depending on all of these miracles to happen simultaneously is irresponsible public policy."

You guys want to give it a rest and let others comment on how $4... $3 ... er, $2 a gallon gas affects them?

Thanks.

Isn't the fact that the high speed rail will save California drivers a lot of gas money and "impact them" in regard to the miles they drive a valid point of discussion?

The rail is designed to save drivers from spending $2 or $3 or $5 a gallon on gas.

$2.60 gas (the latest price I paid) has impacted me by enabling me to pay off my gas card for the first time since spring. I had been letting a balance ride during the $4.50 period, because my monthly bill had exceeded $350 several times. Now it's down into much more manageable territory, $200 or less.

I'm glad for that.

I just got my gas the other day for $1.93. I'm rather amused, without even knowing it I've gone about 380 miles since the 1st of the month. I don't know how I rack up so many miles; I don't go anywhere, at least that's what I thought.

I was able to fill my tank from just under half the other day for $22 and then a couple days after that I was able to fill 8.9 gallons for $17ish.

It's kind of nice.

Well, if gas goes down in price, fewer people will be inclined to take the train.

But all is not lost for high-speed rail fans in California. Farmers can load the empty passenger trains up with chickens, cows, pigs, etc., and allow them to roam freely in the train, thus meeting the requirements of Proposition 2. Maybe they can even have porters serve the animals their feed...

Farm animals would thus not be confined, and even expand their sight-seeing opportunities, too. The rail lines would be ensured a steady stream of passengers.

I never realized how far you had to drive my friend. I can see why some of our perspectives on what we need in a car are so different. Considering the car you drive you are a long distance commuter. Still when gas was about $4.00 I could clearly see the need for mass transit in my area. One day some friends and I decided to take the metro rail from san Bernardino to LA to spend the day. It was such a stress free ride that I thought back to the days when I had to commute that same distance. If we would have had something like the metro rail going to where I worked when I was making that commute I would have jumped on it in a minute.

Like anyone else I would like it if my Tahoe got 20+ MPG and that I could have a city car that got 60+ even if Gas was $1.50 and for sure if it is $4.00. But we need to get mass transit going in all of our states if we are going to have any "real" lasting effect on our energy useage in this country.

I can remember many times being in these forums and hearing people complain how fuel was just too cheap in the US. They even suggested that the solution to our transportation problems would be higher fuel prices. But there is always a cause and effect and even if I drove less, which I do, the increased cost of transporting goods has effected me even more than the cost of fuel for my car.

Yes, I have noticed a lot of that too. A report on the news last night said food price increases have outstripped inflation for the second or third (I forget which) year in a row this year and are expected to increase even more steeply in 2009. I notice that just as much as I notice gas prices. The reasons they gave included increasingly expensive animal feed and transport costs, both of which are highly dependent on the cost of diesel.
