"How many people like you and me will "revert" back to their wasteful ways and park the bike now that prices are coming down? "

I don't think I will revert. I am enjoying myself too much. One of the men in our Bike Club is 83 and still riding. He rides a recumbent but he puts in 40 to 60 miles a week.

I put gas in the Tahoe during a trip August 19th. I didn't put any more fuel in it till October 8th. I did drive it to Home depot but that was only five miles round trip. Like I said my fuel useage is down close to 60 percent since I moved. Cycling is not only healthy but practical where I live and I have a small trailer for grocery shopping.

But $4.00 gas effected me in other ways, the price of goods and food. Trucks are the life blood of any city and if they are paying more they have to charge more. So when I see fuel dropping I am encouraged. At least the economy has people thinking about alternatives now so it isn't so bad if at least in the fuel area we get some relief. I simply wouldn't care to live in a place like Europe where fuel prices take such a large share of my living expenses. Last time I was in London gas was about $9.00 a gallon. Or what ever 1.95 pounds a liter works out to. And even my Pontiac seems big by their standards. No thanks on little French cars as well. I would like to have some service with my vehicle choices and the last time they were here they couldn't even spell service.

Many of our cities were designed with the car in mind and I believe that is part of what makes us different. For us to recover as a society we "need" low fuel prices. I think the high fuel prices we saw we the cornerstone to the slide in the economy. I only hope our desire to try alternatives to our car love affair stays with us this time. If I could find a EV city car that gave me a range of 100 miles I would sell the compact and only have the EV and the Tahoe. Oh and my bicycles!

Sounds like the perfect combination to me. I would get a GEM for runs to the Store, bank and PO, if they were legal. Not allowed in CA on streets posted over 35 MPH.

There I have an advantage. I can get to the bank, store and post office without getting on a street posted over 35. I can go to the shopping mall and the walmart. I just can't go to the refuse station.

But I can ride my bicycle from here to San Diego if my lungs and legs were up to it. At this point they are not.

But the fuel prices have effected my mindset and unlike most Californians I just don't believe I have to drive everywhere. When I take out the Pontiac we always combine errands. That way I only put gas in it every three weeks. Gas was $2.99 at the downtown Colorado Springs Shamrock today. Almost made my face break from my smile. I no longer believe we should have bailed out wall street. Maybe gas would have fallen below $2.00 by now?

Everytime you bring these figures up I will continue to correct the erroneous conclusion..

The RAV4, 4Runner, FJ, Prius and Land Cruiser ( OK tiny volume ) are all made in Japan.

With the direction of the US$ vs the JY and the Euro over the last 12 months it would be foolish and a huge business error to increase sales in the US with its increasingly worthless currency. To maintain or increase sales in the US while limiting sales in Europe or Asia is like setting money on fire.

Now when the RAV and the Prius are made here soon ( Nov 08 and 2010 ) there will likely be a spike in volume because the currency issue will be gone. TheFJ is dead. The 4Runner will return to its roots in the desert and the LC will remain for a chosen few.

The first dealer Mossy has 28 RAV4s on their lot. 11 of them are still 2008 models. That looks like lack of sales not lack of inventory. Same for the Prius. They are sitting on 17 Prius. They are even putting money on the hood of the Prius, $2500 or 0% financing.

But who will save us from Eddie the Eco Terrorist? If Al Gore has his way you'll be riding that bike on a treadmill to power his mansion.

The 0% does not apply to the Prius.. It's on 11 specific models but none of the hybrids - for now.

The $2500 discount? That's a new and entirely different story since the Credit Meltdown. It's not from Toyota, it's dealer specific. Every auto retailer is in dire straits today. I'd expect a 20-50% reduction in total buying across the board for the next 6 months, Buyers right now are just sitting on their hands. I'd expect with annual sales at the 13 million unit rate that as many as 40-50% of the domestic stores will close their doors and Toy/Honda will each be down 20+%.

Every store in our area is running skinny with layoffs in all salaried positions. Former salaried positions are being offered positions on the floor ( sell or starve ) or out the door.
