Yes, this may sound silly, but I remember that I used to have a 2000 V6 Mustang with ALL the options, and it seemed "fast" when I drove it as a teenager. Two cars later, I now have a 2008 Altima 2.5 SL sedan. Part of the reason I got it was because of its fuel economy and its still pretty fun to drive for a midsize, 4cyl sedan. Amazingly enough, the horsepower numbers have been revised quite a bit since 2000, so now the output of each engine is quite similar.

It made me wonder, how does a modern 2.5L 4cyl sedan stack up against a raw-power 3.8L V6 sports car? I'm only talking about driving dynamics. (Obviously the new Altima would win on features alone)

Any thoughts?

The Altima realistically is within ten horsepower of the Mustang (the revised SAE Testing procedures brought down most ratings 2 years or so ago). Under the new ratings, I'd bet the Mustang would be around 185. Couple that with a less-efficient 4-speed automatic and the Mustang would slow down considerably, probably into Altima territory (7.4 sec for the CVT). Actually, I found this about the NEW Mustang, with the 4.0L 210hp V6, from a 2007 Comparo in C/D:

The big V-6 is strong, producing the best 0-to-60 times at 7.3 seconds. It's also loud and crude-sounding, with enough roar on acceleration to convince one of our drivers that it still uses an engine-driven cooling fan. Nope, the fan is electric, but the roar is one more contributor to the retro theme.

So, the Mustang is right on top of Altima numbers today, and probably was then too. The extra noise probably made it sound like it was going even faster, too.
