The European obsession with sport hatches stretches back at least 30 years to the original Volkswagen Golf GTi. The hot hatchback (as it's known in the U.K.) is the everyman supercar, the stuff of adolescent fantasy. The sedan is the preserve of the elderly and infirm, and it's no wonder that four-door saloons account for less than 30 percent of the U.K. market. Replying to: KarenS (Jul 10, 2008 11:29 am) It's amazing how much different two cars with the same name can look. See 2004 model, which I guess was the last "SportBack" they sold in USofA. Alas, looks like another nice 5-door I can add to my 'not available here' list.

Replying to: KarenS (Jul 10, 2008 11:29 am) It's a shame that the USA market tends to look down on hatchbacks. Over the years, I've seen 5-door versions of several mid-size to compact Japanese sedans that, in my opinion, really looked sharp. This new Lancer is yet another example. To no one's surprise, the US automotive landscape is going to change. I hope Mitsubishi sends this 5-door our way.
