First Drive: 2008 Subaru Exiga GT - A fused, Japanesespeak hodgepodge of "exciting" and "active," the Exiga is slightly wider, longer and taller than the Outback. The extra 4.5 inches it picks up in height over the Outback ensures that third-row passengers get plenty of headroom. (more)

Pro: * more ratios than Forester * SI drive and an improved one at that * upgraded brake package * it actually handles * big cargo area * 3rd row inhabitable * 27k price is still very reasonable Con: * still too small to do much volume here * I fear the roomy 3rd row is a photographic trick with a special lens * profile does look awful - rear half just looks swollen * not high up enough (seating position) for Americans? The real problem is if they brought it here it might cannibalize the pricier and less roomy Tribeca. |

Replying to: ateixeira (Jul 02, 2008 12:34 pm) AJ, Are you sure about less roomy? As a 7P none of these cars are great. I believe the Tribeca is wider and has a roomier 2nd row when used as a 5P. If gas continues to rise then the Exiga would be a smart move for the US. Toyota is responding quickly to market by bringing in a 5-door Yaris - which will cut into their small car sales but help maintain total cars sold. If Subaru does nothing they will sell fewer cars. If the Exiga is any indication of what Subaru's future is like and I believe it is, then the new Legacy/Outback should be a grand slam. The Exiga may be for markets where the Tribeca won't sell Anyway....just my two cents. Charlie

Replying to: css1 (Jul 02, 2008 1:23 pm) The US nearly qualifies. Don't know how long Tribeca can plod along at around 1000 sales per month. In June it was down almost 20% over the same month last year. Exiga could pick up the slack 'til Tribeca's redesign, but it'd probably take 2-3 years to get it here anyway. |

Replying to: css1 (Jul 02, 2008 1:23 pm) Jeff: June sales for the Tribeca were down, but it had a couple of good months prior to that. It should pick up again when gas prices stabilize. Early summer typically has the highest gas prices for the year. |

"The Exiga doesn't win any styling awards when seen in profile. (Photo by Keishi Okuzumi)" This car reminds me it's time for some new eye glasses!!! A second look at it from the side makes me wounder what would happen if you put too much weight in the rear??? Hehehehe!!! |

The 2.0 Turbo won't win any points for milege so the argument of milege is a poor one. But no doubt it would be a whole lot more enjoyable to drive than a mini van. Toss a solid diesel in it get the milege up to the high 30's and I'll be the first in line to drive and buy one. Till then my 2001 Legacy GT 150,000 miles will continue to be our road tripper. Just did 8hr each way July 4th trip to visit family 25mpg with roof top box full trunk - 3 adults and a dog. Only issue I've had with my 2001 is it needs a little more cooling capacity when the outside temps hit 90+. So bring it to the US in diesel and plenty of cooling capability!!!!!! Please If the back windows had more of a sleek Legacy GT wagon look I think it would look a whole lot better. |
