Comparison Test: 2008 Toyota Prius vs. 2008 Toyota Camry Hybrid - If we restrict our analysis to EPA fuel economy figures alone, the Prius triumphs before we ever start. Its 48 mpg city and 45 highway fuel economy (46 mpg combined) is the best you can buy from anyone right now.

Guy walks into a Toyota dealer looking for a 2008 Toyota Prius. He's heard about hybrids for awhile now, and the Prius is one he knows by name. He vaguely recalls some celebrity bragging about taking one to the Academy Awards instead of a limo, and then there was that South Park episode, "Smug Alert" a couple of years back. And didn't Al Gore's own son make headlines for getting busted doing 100 mph in his Prius? Comparison Test: 2008 Toyota Prius vs. 2008 Toyota Camry Hybrid |

| My dealer let me drive the Camry and Prius overnight before I decided. I found the torque in the Prius gave the car more oomph from a stop light. Despite the comments in your article that the Camry was larger, I'm over 6' and I have at least 6" above my head in the Prius and no sense of being crammed in the car. You missed one of the most important advantages of the Prius. The hatch gives you the utility of an SUV on those occasions when you need to bring something home from Home Depot. I cannot tell you the number of times this has helped me. I traded a Toyota Highlander for the Prius and have much of the utility of the SUV in the Prius. My only regret is that the Prius doesn't come with a sunroof for those times you would like to get some sun and fresh air on your face. They're both great cars. | |

My wife and I negotiate for the keys to the Prius. And I usually lose the debate, leaving me to humbly drive around in my '07 Porsche GT3 ... not a bad thing of course, but when it comes to errands around town or a holiday weekend to Lake Tahoe, the Prius is a slam dunk. The reviewer is wrong to characterize the Prius as slow in traffic or merging -- we find the Prius to be amply capable of moving swiftly through traffic, acceleration to 70 mph is effortless and the car is then remarkably quiet and smooth even on the dismal, pothole-infested lunar landscape they call a freeway in the Bay Area. Several of my friends have added a Prius to their garage alongside Porsches and other even more expensive and exotic machinery. It quickly becomes their preferred vehicle when they want to get from A to B and enjoy the drive. We've had an '05 model since early '05 and paid "sticker" for it (waiting for the initial hype to subside.) Now with almost 50K miles, it's never let us down and we bought the extended service and warranty products, so a trip to dealer is inexpensive. Nothing has "failed" on the Prius, but we did have the HID headlights replaced when the plastic inside changed shape as if it had overheated and melted slightly. The brake pads were replaced on the front at about 40K miles and the factory tires lasted only about 8K miles (we live on a windy road and the shoulders of the tires wore out.) Putting on "performance" tires didn't impact fuel consumption but gave the car confidence on the road, more sure-footed cornering and braking as well as getting rid of the incessant squealing of the cheap factory tires. The cabin trim has held up to two kids and two dogs, the paint has held up to the seemingly deliberate efforts of people in parking lots to dent and chip the doors. If they change the design for the next model, I'd ask for a deeper rear cargo area (instead of the space wasted underneath) and more rear seat leg room -- a two year old toddler in a car seat can have an annoying habit of kicking the back of the driver's seat ...) |
