Widespread Use Of Fuel Cells by drmike

I'm somewhat encouraged by much of what I read about this technology. I certainly agree that experimentation in this area should continue.

However, we have major problems right now regarding our cost for fuel and dependence on ME oil - even though the % of ME oil imported is relatively small, we could not afford to have that supply cut off.

And, therein lies the rub. We have immediate problems regarding not simply the cost of oil, but national/economic security issues as well, but as far as alternative fuel choices for motor driven vehicles, we have only long-term solutions.

The best estimate I have seen for marketing affordable fuel cell/hydrogen distribution is at least 10 years out.

Burning ethanol at the expense of farm subsidies, corn useage and effects on food prices is little more than a boondoggle.

Everytime I hear a discussion about future vehicles being powered by plug-in rechargeable electric batteries I fail to hear where the necessary electricity is going to come from.

Colleges/universities, as well as private labs are working to find workable alternatives to fossil fuels, but we are by no means close to mastering whatever future technology will be employed.

So, given the world politics and the need to safeguard our nation's economic viability, we had best begin extracting the oil needed to drive this economy, and constructing the necessary refinery space.

Otherwise, we run the risk of our enemies in the Middle East cutting off 10% of our oil supply and creating a 100% problem for this country.

I for one don't feel like risking getting involved in WW3 over refusing to drill in 2000 acres of mosquito infested tundra or refusing to drill 60 miles off the Florida coast - where there is safely extractable oil, and where the Chinese are already extracting much of it.
