Cowbell,

I have sat, rode, driven and even ordered one and the only major complaint I have is that it is not here yet. I was at the Detroit auto show and got my first taste of it without the sales pitch from the display folks. I was impressed then and still am now. I remember my first impression on the styling inside and out saying "These guys were on the good dope when they designed this."

Yes there are a few points of concern but none of them were deal busters. One of the major complaints I had heard and notice was the trunk opening. Yes it is smaller, but I could still could get a couple of duffle bags in it. The trunk is so huge; the Sopranos could have used this car.

If there was a car out there that satisfied me totally with no issues what so ever, I probably could not afford it. But I will say this MKS is damm close. I plan on providing a detail report on it to all who are interested once I have mine in my hands. The one I ordered had just about everything you could put on it, which is taking the time. The 20 inch rims are not available yet.

I thought Inside Line was on the cheap stuff myself on their eval. I have looked at all the others, but I think the MKS was a great knock out of the park to start. I see more home runs coming with the 2009 MKZ, and the 2009 MKT as well.

That was the second opinion. The main article was pretty fair in its assessment.

We all know the Lincoln is a slightly bigger, ES350. The second opinion, by the way, was not harsh either--until he considered the $46K price. I agree with him that is too high for this type of car and too high for Lincoln right now. They need to build market share. Of course, this is the same company that has been pricing that hoary old Town Car in the same range...and then selling it for more like $30K if that.

First, why is he comparing the MKS to much smaller cars? The ES350 is a Camry based midsized car. The MKS is a full size vehicle.

When one reviewer's opinions are 180 degrees from every other reviewer's opinions you just have to chalk it up to bias or just a totally different personal preference.

Shouldn't it be compared with larger luxury vehicles with similar features like a MB E350 or a Lexus GS350? It may lose a bit in handling but luxury and feature wise I think it's very competitive and quite a bit underpriced - relatively speaking.

I think the MKS was a great knock out of the park to start. I see more home runs coming with the 2009 MKZ, and the 2009 MKT as well. I hope you are right, but I don't see it. The MKS is not tearing up the sales charts, the MKZ is still too close to a Fusion to justify its price, and the MKT concept that was so bold has been lengthened and dumbed down into a big station wagon thing.

Furthermore, Lincoln may be moving toward a more unified grill theme, but the MKS doesn't say Lincoln otherwise. Nor does the MKZ. Ford has a long history now of planning to make its brands instantly recognizable. However, they change the styling themes so often that all they end up with is a hodgepodge. Now the three bar grill is being phased out for Fords, even though it was never rolled out across the board. You can go back decades, and a plebeian brand like Pontiac's grill is always recognizable.

Shouldn't it be compared with larger luxury vehicles with similar features like a MB E350 or a Lexus GS350? I don't think so. It has lots of luxury features and excels in that bland luxury area that some Lexi also operate, but comparing it to established and well-regarded RWD cars that may not have every bell and whistle the MKS has is not going to get it accolades. LIncoln overpriced it. They should have taken the Lexus or Korean approach (start low and undercut everyone, and then raise the price when established as a car people really want).

Do you really think most buyers of E350s and GS350s even know (or care) that their vehicle is RWD? I don't. BMW 750i buyers? More likely but still not a majority.

And if being FWD presents a deficit for the MKS against the RWD competition then that should come out in the comparison.

I just don't think it's ever fair to compare a larger vehicle to smaller vehicles - the smaller vehicle has inherent advantages just because of size (handling, fuel economy).

Would you compare a MB E350 to a Lexus ES350? I don't think so. So why do it here?

I completely agree with you and wrote an email to the reviewer saying the same thing. The car is more than a foot longer than the ES or CTS and yet he is surprised that it is heavier than they are. He makes comments about the interior suggesting that it is generally poor by saying that it is not equal to an Audi. What car is?

Aside from the actual test numbers there is an unseemly lack of accurate assessments in this review. Maybe he was expecting something different, but Lincoln never compared this car to a CTS let alone BMW. To opine otherwise is disingenuous. Finally, none of his criticisms were mentioned by other professional reviewers from Car and Driver, Motor Trend or Road and Track leading one to seriously question his credibility and objectivity.

First off, it doesn't matter to me that an ES350 driver may not know his or her car is FWD. GS350 drivers do pay extra for the exclusivity and features of one, and are more likely to know that it is RWD, but again, that doesn't matter. What does is that the GS350, BMW 5 series and E350 all handle like smaller cars than they are. The MKS not so much. And the MKS, while it handles fine for most people, is not up to the standards of the cars you want it to go against, so why go through that?

The MKS has to be a transition from the Town Car to something else, and even with the less firm handling characteristics Lincoln dialed in, a lot of people are finding the ride too firm, not smooth enough. This is a critical time for Lincoln. To compare an important vehicle like the MKS to something that it is not yet designed to go up against, will not help anything.

But I think it does go up against those vehicles in the luxury areas and I think it will fare just fine. Why not do the comparo and find out?
