Pontiac G3 in US by georgecavalier

I have heard rumors that the Pontiac G3 (rebadged Aveo) is comping to the US. Does anyone know if it's true? I think it would be a horrible mistake and a huge step backwards. GM should be turning Pontiac into the RWD performance division like they have been promising. The G8 and Solstice is a big step in the right direction so I don't know why they would want to take a step back with the G3. Also since it seems that besides the grille and tail lights this car is identical to the Aveo. Badge engineering is not a good idea. I understand that in this day and age you need a fuel efficient car to sell but a RWD G5 replacement that could also be a 1-series fighter would do the trick.

The confusion, as I've seen it, stems from the Pontiac G3 being listed in the EPA's fuel economy guide. There have been MANY vehicles registered with the EPA that have never been sold in the US. Some have been sold in Puerto Rico and other territories, but not sold in the 50 states.

That being said, I don't think that Pontiac selling a small car would be as detrimental as you're making it out to be. With gas prices rising and demand shifting from V8/RWD vehicles to small four-cylinder vehicles, adding the G3 would be a great way to keep Pontiac afloat. It's great to pit an American brand against the likes of BMW, but you can't do that overnight. Even BMW has Mini (a small FWD four-cylinder) being sold in their dealerships. Unless Buick-Pontiac-GMC wants to add ANOTHER brand name to their dealerships, adding a G3 to the Pontiac lineup isn't the worst idea ever.

It's fine the Pontiac wants to sell a small car like the G3. I think a small car is important for any car brand but I think they're going about it the wrong way. My main beef with the car itself is that it looks too much like the Aveo. Bob Lutz in one of his blogs said that GM was trying to make badge engineering a thing of the past.... now here comes the G3 and G5, carbon copies of the Aveo and Cobalt respectively.
I think a RWD compact is completely do-able. They have the Kappa platform (AKA Solstice) and I'm sure there are others. I understand that it is not cost effective at this point in time for GM to engineer a new platform just for one vehicle.

I am not sure what to think about it right now. They sell it as a Pontiac in Canada right now if im not mistaken. Everyone rebadges cars because that is the economical way to produce cars. Toyota is big into it as well as Ford, Volkswagon, Chrysler, etc, etc.

My local dealer has 'em. Ugh.

BTW why is this thread in the G8 Forum?
Might as well mix the Aveo threads with the Corvettes.

Yeah, why is it in here? And, why do we have "another" compact car. Don't we already have the vibe? Which is pontiac, and Chevy has a compact. Why are we making so many compacts? It is like how many duplicate SUV's, Compacts, mid sized sedan, are we going to make. This is a reason anyone would eventually have money troubles, not even including the ups and downs of the market. you have yourself stretched too thin.

Isn't pontiac dead soon? Once the G8 is gone, well, its got nothing left to attract.
Nothing in their line up right now seems to have anything up to date like its competitors.

Wow.

Just another of the many reasons to drop the Pontiac lineup entirely.

When an entirely new model is in the works, we often don't have the option available to categorize it under the correct make/model until it's a sure thing and production nears. We try our best to pick a semi-close appropriate category.

Perhaps getting rid of the forums for new Pontiac cars all together... looks like its a possibility.
