Yes, Mazda has been different strokes for different folks, and Mazda is admittedly proud they are not "another mainstream company". However, I totally get the impression that Mazda did try to emulate Camry/Accord/Altima with the new 6 despite Mazda stating they are targeting the enthusiast. The interior is nicer, the styling is quite nice, the handling is just not as improved as the rest of the car is. |

As far as the packages go, while Mazda's are better than Nissan's outrageous packages, I can understand why a person would complain about Mazda: - For the 2009 Mazda 6 GT, a person who likes the premium stereo also has to go for the sunroof! That's unfair, as sunroofs and stereos are not related in function at all......I like the premium stereo but NOT the sunroof. - A person who opts for the Touring trim cannot get a few of the GT options. He/she basically has to pay for one HUGE package that vitually converts the Touring to the GT! That is really ridiculous. Honestly, I wish manufacturers would allow users to choose the features they want......they could make a reasonable demand, like "if you opt to choose the individual options, you have to factory-order the car....that could take one to two months". But lumping options into huge packages is just not acceptable IMO....small packages with a few features are okay. Some of the guys here have commented on the interior of the 2009 Mazda 6. Man, it's gorgeous! The one I saw at the dealership had black dash and floors and brown seats. It is the most beautiful interior I've ever seen in a non-luxury car...wow!

I mean you could order each and every option individually. It was almost the exception buy a car "made for someone else" off the lot. I think the Japanese had a hand in turning the way cars are bought now....mostly off lot vs ordering. This was probably because the lead time from order here in the US to manufacturing plant in Japan and then the shipping time was just too long for any customer to wait. So they looked at the way most people optioned the cars out and just made them that way. They seem to have done a pretty good job of getting it right. The the Big Three(actually the Big Four then as American motors was still in business well after the Asian invasion) started emulating them to some degree. However, pull up a Ford F-150 and you'll still see individual options lists several pages long and I'm not sure I would want to go through that routine either. There is some economy for both the manufacturer and the customer in packaging options. For sure there is probably more profit for the manufacturer too!

Hi Guys, Check this out: http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/sedans/112_0808_2009_mazda6_isport_first_tes- t/index.html MOTOR TREND just tested the 2009 Mazda 6 4-cyl 6-spd manual. They say that gearbox is excellent....and so is the interior apart from the cloth seats. The interior is better than those of the CamCord. As far as sportiness goes, their assessment is pretty much the same as Edmunds': the car is amongst the sportiest in the segment but not the sportiest......they found it to be less sporty than the Passat. Unfortunately, MOTOR TREND don't provide info on things like fuel economy. In all, it seems Edmunds' tests are more thorough.

I noticed you conveniently omitted the fact that the Passat they tested was $5,000 MORE in MSRP compared to the 6, or the fact that Passat (and VW as a whole) has quality/reliability ratings that are much worse than the 6. As for the interior comments, I've got a '04 6 with 69K miles, with an interior that's in excellent shape (except for a worn drivers seat), with no creaks or rattles. This is compared to a 58K '05 Passat that my neighbor owned. Scratches galore over the dash, the steering wheel worn and faded, a missing grip for the e-brake, and holes in not only the carpeted mats, but the carpeting underneath as well. Half the reason why he ditched the car was because of the constant rattling from the trunk areas and behind the dash (the other half being the constant trips to the repair shop and the high costs of both maintenance and repairs). How's that for an endorsement? |

Passat is midsize, so it is the correct comparison by class, it does have a significant level of standard equipment the Mazda does not, so buyers are obtaining value for the additional cost. The 6 speed tiptronic in the Passat is a fantastic transmission. VW was determined as best brand for resale value for 2008. link Resale Value Top Brand Mazda6 has a poor record of residual value. Right now, Accord or Altima would be my midsize choices, Passat would not make the list. If I wanted to save money, the Fusion would be considered. As far as I'm concerned, all of the "midsize" cars are getting too large. |
