Those are the reasons why I purchased the Mazda6 along with the fact that it was much cheaper than the SUV alternatives (at least, at the time)

Earlier in this discussion, someone made reference to a separate discussion on the 2009 Mazda6 general features, etc.. I don't see it listed within Edmunds's Forums and discussion. Is there such a forum someplace?

Also, what is the scheduled arrival date of the new model at the dealerships.??

I can hardly wait to see/try this new version. I haven't owned a Mazda since my 1988 I4/5-spd manual MX-6, which was the most reliable, best handling auto I've ever owned. And I kept it far longer than any other Car I've owned; 9 years...! Awesome car that maybe is going to be repeated by the 2009 Mazda6 ?? Hopefully...!!

"Our wheelman at the test track comments that even though the Mazda 6 doesn't deliver Altima levels of athleticism, it's pretty good nonetheless."

My worst fears from the First Drive has proven true in the Full Test! Mazda 6 has lost the best thing about it: it is no longer the class leader in sportiness! To me, a modern Mazda is a failure when it isn't sportier than its non-luxury competition. I understand Mazda making the car larger, but did they have to make it softer with light steering....while no longer offering class-leading braking performance?

Now I'm so confused. I'm not completely thrilled by the new Mazda 6, the Altima doesn't offer a decently-equipped manual and its automatic is a stupid CVT, the Accord is bland in styling....but has class-leading V6 economy. No car in the current midsized line up excites me.

Maybe I should keep my Protege5 for a long time or get a lightly-used 2007 Mazda 6 GT manual!

The 2009 Mazda 6 is not the sportiness class leader. That's disappointing.

Yea, that statement jumped out at me as well. It's a pretty damning statement for a Mazda. Less athletic than an Altima? That's no where near the old 6.

Hopefully, the driver is mostly referring to the Altima's superior power plant (although that's another disappointment).

Let's see, Mazda could've had a smaller lighter 6 with great styling, better fuel economy, and more sportiness.

But, they made the car slightly larger, slightly worse styling, worse fuel economy, less sporty. They gave up too much just to be slightly closer to a Camcord.

The problem is the car needed to be lager to accept the 3.7 V6.

I too preferred the Euro/JDM version. But, in all seriousness, Mazda does have to compete with Camry/Altima/Accord and Mazda had numbers that they were losing sales because of size. Plain and simple.

We can all pooh pooh the decision, but it was not a knee jerk thing. If they could have brought the Euro/JDM here and sold volume they would have and saved the R/D $$.

Trobson, I don't mind the extra size....like you said, they just had to remain competitive.

But what I can't forgive is the extent of reduction in sportiness, to the extent that it is no longer the class leader........where is the zoom-zoom we were promised? (To me zoom-zoom means a Mazda model will sportier than all its non-luxury competition. All Mazda models since the zoom-zoom campaign have kept this promise until now.)
The 2009 Mazda 6 has light uncommunicative steering, a soft suspension, no manual for the V6, and unimpressive braking performance. Mazda compromised on the traits that matter the most to its fans like me. And mediocre fuel economy to boot!

Now the only real reason to buy the 2009 Mazda 6 is the stylishness (relative to the US competition) and the high equipment levels.
